i, Robot

Trailer

Well, I can finally cross off i, Robot from my 'Must-see-movie' list. I have no knowledge of the books content, but I was aware of what the plot was regarding this. It was never a movie that I had to see...or even wanted to see over the years. But somewhere along the way this past year, suddenly I had the urge to finally check it out. Prior to watching this tonight, I did hear more negative things about the movie than actual good things.

So, what side do I stand on with regards to i, Robot? Somewhere in the middle. Actually slightly toward the good side. Yes, there are a few problems I have with the movie, but I think overall it's a good flick. I wasn't particularly a fan of what the Robots looked like. Scratch that, I didn't like the look at all, but the more I got into Sonny, the more his look seemed to suit him. The plot though was a bit too simplistic for my taste. The idea of Machine rising up to conquer the human race has been done countess times before and nothing can top the Terminator series in that department. I think the best part of the movie is the first 2/3 of the film. It's the final act that didn't really deliver in a way I was hoping it would. It was decent, just not spectacular.

I'd definitely recommend this as a Rent at best. It's not a movie that I will ever revisit. Certainly not anytime soon anyway. Not one of Will Smith's personal best, but certainly not one of his worst.

Remember that when this movie came out that computers were starting to look like Sonny, especially the Macs, see through plastic and so on.  I guess now he would look like a stainless steel sculpture or something like that, and next?  Who knows.

From what I understand, the movie was originally called HardWired or something like that and then Fox realized that they had the rights to the book so they sort of merged them together.  The book is actually a set of stories about Susan Calvin and there's an illustrated screenplay that was released in paperback by Harlan Ellison that puts them all together in a style like Citizen Kane.

What's your opinion of the movie? Does it do the story justice at all or completely disregard the source material as suggested in the end credits?

Totally disregards the story of and spirit of the books, which is about logically figuring stuff out.

And I saw the movie once or twice, never really felt the urge to watch it again.
