Independence Day: 5 Star Collection

Trailer

With my current kick on Disaster Flicks still in full effect, I decided to bust out ID4 which I haven't seen in a long while. I remember when me a a few friends went to see this on opening night...the midnight showing and the place was packed. You could feel the electricity in the air. Everyone was so into this because the hype for the movie had been building for so long. It was a fun night and everyone had a blast. Back then this was one of my favorite Disaster Flicks at the time. The Special FX were awesome, the size and scale of the movie was EPIC.

Fast forward to tonight. Although I have seen this quite a few times since that day, the movie is definitely starting to show it's age. A lot of the FX shots that blew me away back then look bad in a lot of places throughout the movie now. And what was so EPIC then seems rather tame by today's standard. That's what happens when movies rely heavily on FX Set Pieces like this one. Everything evolves as new techniques replace old ones and just make some things stick out like a sore thumb after the fact.

It may sound like I'm bashing ID4, but I'm not. ID4 is still a fun movie to watch and get lost in it's escapism. I'm just pointing out how we movie goers are definitely spoiled with each new release as the FX get more impressive and the Set Pieces get longer, almost to the point of overkill. I think that's why I'm still feeling the post-movie orgasm of 2012.

In spite of Harvey Fierstein annoying voice and Randy Quaid's over-the-top hammy acting, this is still a Buy for me as I'm sure that I will watch this again and again in the future.

What are these aging things you speak of… wait.. don’t tell me. Then I’ll start to notice them and not enjoy the movie. There are certain movies that do show their age, just by the environment they were shot in. The dialogue, the style, the film, the music can all attribute to these things… and that’s unfortunate. Other’s despite that hold up well. Maybe it’s me. I still think the original War of the Worlds holds up great. It might be my nostalgic feelings towards it.

Seriously though, I understand. If you watch things enough over time, it’s inevitable. I was watching Alien again (for the eleven gajillion time) last night with the director’s version. Before the movie starts Ridley Scott talks to audience of the ‘why’ for a director’s cut. It’s precisely his own perspective that changed over time. Overall he’s happy with what he did, but even as he watches it 25 years later, he see’s nuances of change that he wanted to change.

No worries. I'll keep the scenes in question to myself so as not to ruin it for ya. But to general viewers of the film, it's not hard to notice some pretty bad FX shots mostly involving Green-screen techniques.

Oh those kinds of things. If you ever go to imdb and look at the 'Goofs' section, ID4 has one of the largest lists I've ever seen.

Nice find there. A movie like this is always bound to have a lot of continuity errors because it's hard to keep track of small stuff on a Tent Pole flim. I always cut them some slack if it's minor stuff. But if it they dropped the ball on something major, then I will throw my rotten tomato at them. Checking out that link, there were a handful that I had already noticed from repeated viewings and some that I never caught before.

Finding gaffes can be kinda fun, especially for well loved movies.

I forgot to mention that ID4 2 has been kicked around for a long time. So many starts and stops. But it looks like it's going forward and that they are pursuing Will Smith to reprise his role. Haven't heard anything about Jeff Goldblum though.

I find it hard to believe the sequel was never made, even if Roland didn't want anything to do with it. This movie has been huge in fans eyes and studios. I'm still not going to hold my breath. Those asshat studio's are looking up their collective asses and still want to do remakes. I just read yesterday about rebooting Fantastic 4. WTF

Yeah, not sure why they didn't immediately shoot ID4 2 and ID4 3 a couple of years after the first one. Yep, ID4 3 is also in the works as Roland wants to turn this into a Trilogy.
