Iron Man 3

Trailer

I went into Iron Man 3 with no expectations. Yes, I loved The Avengers (Iron Man's previous film appearance), but I had heard that most people were split down the middle about what IM3 was: Good and Bad. Of course this raised some alarms for me, but at the end of the day, I brush that off. It was Iron Man 2 that was still in the back of my mind and I wasn't sure it could redeem itself. Well, the first 30 minutes of IM3 was leaving a bad feeling that it would repeat another fail. It was dull. It was slow. And it was tooooooo damn long of a set up. But as soon as the attack takes place on Tony Starks Mansion, everything finally came together and it delivered in a big way for me.

Everything after this had everything firing on all cylinders the rest of the way. What's ironic is that there really wasn't all that much of the 'Suit' until the final showdown at the end and boy, we get our fill and more. I thought it was great that they gave Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts THE killing blow against Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), who was f*cking awesome. Just seeing Pepper getting to really shine in such a big, glorious moment is what I like to see in these types of movies. It's Grade-A Popcorn adrenaline and I was super happy with the end results. Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark was good as always and Ben Kingsley as the "Mandarin" was f*cking hilarious. For everyone out there, I say this is a definite Rent, for me, this is definitely something I see eventually Buying for my personal DVD library. I give this one less star because of the overlong setup. Had they just cut out maybe 10-15 minutes and made it tighter, it would have been so much better.

Man, I was so worried about the new suit, the way it would just zoom around and snap onto the body, it just seemed like it was too high-techy (like the holograms EVERYWHERE, it was too futuristic).  I liked the fact that the suits were bulky and hard to get into and so on.  But dang, the way they did it in the movie totally won me over (and I loved getting to see Pepper in the suit).  I do think the movie lost something with them being remote controlled, b/c if that's the case, why would you ever need to wear the things in the first place?  And there was definite overkill with the sheer NUMBER of suits.

Having said all of that, I love that when Tony crash lands, he's stuck hauling that suit around.  I quite liked that visual of him sitting on the sofa with the thing, it was a nice visual showing how.. well, how he's not connected to it anymore.  I think it was quite smart to get Tony out of the suit and seeing what he can do without it, making his own little gizmos and so on.  You'll notice that the end credits say that "Tony Stark will return," not Iron Man, so they did a good job piquing our interest of what that might entail.

Count me among the people who LOVE what they did with the Mandarin, it was such a great out-of-left-field idea to do and Ben Kingsley owned it.  I'm quite looking forward to his short, "Long Live The King," which should be on the Thor 2 disc (I haven't seen Thor 2 yet).  Now if they could get him on SHIELD or something, that'd be awesome.

I forgot to mention the final scene at the tail end of the credits. Even though it does nothing to set up any forthcoming movie (The Avengers 2), just seeing Downey and Mark Ruffalo riffing off each other did more for me than any trailer in getting me anxious to see TA2. With that out of the way, there was a part of me that was begging for Tony Stark to annoy Banner with his incessant talking that he would lose his patience, turning his eyes green.......and THEN fading to black. Ack! Blown opportunity.

I can't believe I forgot about that!  "I'm not really that kind of Doctor."

God, it sucks that we haven't had a Ruffalo Hulk movie.  Well, at this point it would be redundant, how about just a movie of those two on a mission of some kind?  Marvel Team Up?

I'm hopeful we will get a Ruffalo / Hulk stand-alone movie eventually.

I dunno, it seems like a real step backwards if they actually did it: first, they did TWO Hulk movies, and they were both okay and did decent enough bank, I guess, but there's really only so much you can do with that character in his own narrative (especially if he's got a HANDLE on his power).  And the Marvel movies seem to be going in wider directions.  We COULD get Planet Hulk, I suppose, which might be interesting, then he could team up with Guardians of the Galaxy and get back to Earth that way... but I think in terms of a traditional Hulk movie, I don't think we're gonna get that.

Well, the Eric Bana Hulk SUCKED donkey balls. I like him as an actor, but I thought he was the wrong choice. And the CGI itself was weak. Not good at all. Ed Norton was a step in the right direction, both from an acting standpoint as well as the CGI. But I think they just absolutely nailed it on both accounts in The Avengers with regards to Ruffalo. He brings a certain calm to the character, one that is definitely needed so that when he goes off the rails, there is something behind it. With Bana and Norton, they both always seemed to be p*ssed 24/7, so there really wasn't that dichotomy between calm and anger. I just think that Ruffalo earned it and I'm confident that they (the writers) can come up with something that isn't the same as "Hulk Smash" and going on a 2 hour rampage....as fun as that actually sounds.

Loved the Downton Abbey gag. It got a laugh out of me when 'Happy' seemed to have found his soul mate in the nurse who's rapt attention was glued to the show on TV. I have no idea what they see in that show! ;D

Did you ever review IM3? I was certain that you did, but doing a search last night didn't bring anything up.

Not sure if I wrote one. I'll look.

By the way, I figured out a way to help me locate a review. My library allows me to track everything I check out. I just need to go through the list and see where I check it out.
Then in our DVD thread, hopefully I can zero in on it better.
