It's Gonna Blow!!! San Diego's Music Underground 1986-1996

Trailer

Out of all the DVDs that have come through my local library, seeing It's Gonna Blow!!! San Diego's Music Underground 1986-1996 as something to check out on DVD was the last thing I was expecting. Just browsing through On-Order titles, the name itself naturally caught my attention. I didn't even know this was something in the works because I didn't hear anything prior to its release. With that said, this is a Documentary that revisits the music scene during 1986-1996, or the decade that was being touted as the "Next Seattle" scene by the media and press. Well, that never happened. Honestly, I never understood why we got tagged with that moniker given the fact that there really wasn't band or bands that were exploding in the same way as Pearl Jam, Nirvana or Soundgarden.

Most of the bands that are covered in the doc are relatively unknown bands, even to me.....someone that lived and stills here. It might also be because that music scene was not my cup of tea. I was purely into Rock and Metal at the time. So I ran in different circles back then. Sure, I recognized some, if not all the bands here. But never did I hear from word of mouth that I had to go "see such and such band" live. Out of all the bands that were trying to make it, the only one that really broke through of course was Blink-182. Now you're probably saying "whoa, hold up! What about Stone Temple Pilots?" That depends on how you look at it. Before they were known as STP, they were known as Mighty Joe Young. But if you go by what the other bands in the doc say, they are not a San Diego band by any stretch. There's a bone of contention that they kept saying they were from SD and yet, no one remembers ever seeing them perform locally. The animosity they exhibit toward STP is somewhat humorous to see. I didn't expect that. I'll leave Jewel out of the mix since she is not Punk, Alternative or Grunge, which is what the doc is focused on. Overall, a decent doc. A lot of vintage VHS footage from the bands. Lots of talking heads and it was cool to see new and old location shots of places I know very well. Worth a Rent.
