I will say straight out,
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a very dumb movie and in spite of the overwhelmingly positive reviews it has gotten, it's not a movie I would ever watch again. I do like that they were going down the
This Is Spinal Tap road in their social commentary of the state of music today....or what passes for "music" these days. The only problem is that the movie goes to extremes with the jokes in making their point and maybe that was the intent all along. But to say this is on the same level as
Tap is reaching a bit too far and wide.
Popstar is more of what I would expect to see from
Adam Sandler. Now I'm not saying that
Andy Samberg is a world-class actor mind you, but if you have ever seen
Brooklyn Nine-Nine, then you know that he does have comedic chops and this is what I was expecting to get here. But the movie is just way too goofy to take serious and I shouldn't expect the actors to as well. Then again, maybe that too was their intent. Okay, with that out of the way, there were some laugh out loud moments that are worth checking out. Some truly funny bits here and there in spite of a flawed movie. But as a full-length feature film, it's a hard one to sit through. I would only recommend this to stoners on a weekend with nothing else to watch.
