It Might Get Loud (2009)

Trailer

It Might Get Loud. You either a love it or hate it. I've heard a lot of comments from those that hate it say how "boring" it is or that nothing much comes from having 3 generations of guitar players in the form of Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White sitting around ruminating about the past and their influences. I am not one of those people that has a problem with this. I actually enjoy listening to people talk about what drove them as musicians to pick up the instrument and create music.

If you love the guitar and music in general, I think this is a great film. Sure, it would have been nice to see the 3 of them jamming for 90 minutes on as many songs as possible, but that's not what this film is about. This isn't a wank fest to show off their guitar chops. If you want that, then just stick to any one of their Live DVD's to fill in what you are missing here.

But I will say this, the moments when they all do jam together, it is the crown jewel for me as a fan. And I got a huge kick out of seeing The Edge and Jack's eyes literally popping out as soon as Jimmy started playing Whole Lotta Love. The look of sheer excitement that came across their face is equal to being a kid and opening the biggest wrapped present, knowing full well what's inside. Seeing The Edge jump up and moving closer to Jimmy to see exactly how he was playing the riff shows that even the biggest Rock stars on the planet are still just kids at heart wanting to learn as much as they can.

I think the best thing about this film is that as you are watching it, you really feel inspired to pick up an instrument, be it a guitar, bass or drums and just play something. Anything. If a movie can get you to create something out of thin air or to jam with other musicians or a group of fiends, then I think it's definitely a success as a movie.

One thing I found myself thinking about when watching this is why such and such wasn't also in the movie. The longer the film went on, my laundry list of guitar players that should have been included got longer and longer and ranged from: Joe Satriani, Brian May, Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, Billy Gibbons and on and on. This led me to think that this would have been a cool documentary style series where each new episode would have guest guitar players sit in and share their stories. Well, so much for wishing, huh?

I highly recommend this to any and all fans of guitars and music. A definite Buy.

I am one of those on the other side of the fence and found "Loud" very disappointing. I thought myself sitting on the outside hearing conversations I couldn't relate to. This isn't what I came to watch. I wasn't expecting wall to wall music, but I was expecting music. I think the real problem for me was a good portion of it was with Jack White. He does nothing for me. What I have heard from him is technically good, just it doesn't do anything for me. As much as I love music, maybe that's what's killing it for me, I was expecting so much more. It wasn't horrible, just not worth a re-watch.

I've watched it at least 10 times...maybe 15...I really enjoy it...and can even just put it on for background noise while drawing.

as a matter of fact. I did just that today.

I didn't know there were two sides of the fence for this movie in all honesty...I'd think it's either for you or not...I can't imagine many people would just randomly watch this unless you were a big fan of the players or their stories.

that said....I have a few more names to throw into the list and would LOVE to see a part 2.

the most realistic 3 I would think would be either Pete Townsend (or Brian May) Eddie Van Halen, and probably Tom Morello.

not because I love all three....but I think you've got the 3 basics.....Steve Vai I think would be obnoxious although I do respect him as a player...he's so out there and I'd be worried he'd muck up the movie a little too much....he seems very "affected"  Satirani is a bore...sorry Chip you know how I feel about the guy....he's talented but it's like watching paint dry hearing him play most times......

Billy Gibbons would be interesting....but I mean if you are going to grab a 70's player or late 60's.....I'd go for either Brian May or Townsend.

it's a shame Hendrix isn't still alive...(well that goes without saying)  but man to have him, steve vai, and eddie van halen would have been pretty sick

:)

I think everyone would have sat around and watched Jimi play

:)

Jeff Beck would actually be very cool.

another new player might be Joe Bonamassa.

I'd suggest Yngwie...but he might have the same issues as Vai...although Yngwie has mellowed with age to some extent.

thank goodness.

I kinda get what you mean with Vai, but I think in the context of a movie like this, he would be perfect. I've always enjoyed listening to him talk about Hendrix and Page. It's not really a "watch me play" kind of format, which is what Mac wants and didn't get in It Might Get Loud. Yngwie I absolutely would not want to spend 90 minutes with in a movie. Only if he promised not to talk about himself in the 3rd person would I be open to listening to what he has to say. It's one thing for him being on That Metal Show, it's another for a full movie and we know his ego would get the better of him, justified or not.

As for Satch, you best watch your mouf!

hahahahaha

I saw that Vai concert from maybe 2 years back...and I mean he had the fan blowing on his hair and the girl with the violin, he's so melodramatic and it's this very swishy performance that doesn't seem real or spontaneous....

he's got the goods, and to be honest it's been so long since I've seen or read an interview with him....my only real basis is his stage performance which reminds me of like how I perceive Rudy Sarzo...I know you just read his book and I've seen that one interview (TMS) but he's so goofy on stage....it's like that is ingrained in my head more than anything "and here's how I lick the bass"

;)

Vai would be..."then I hire a hot asian violinist....I have my fan here so my hair will blow this way"

;)

Joe Bonamassa just gets up and shreds

:)

Hey! I too can get up and shred! It's just that I don't have a f ucking fan damn it!!

Vai is just trying to give you a visual performance. I've seen the dude live about 4 times and was blown away each time. He does have that theatrical background and just wants to put on a great show. Tom Morello is a good choice and I would like to see that happen. The guy is a damn good guest on That Metal Show and whip smart about a lot of things. He wouldn't be boring at all.

and Morello did really do something "new" with the guitar....I mean can he play as well as Joe Satriani or Vai...no probably not...well definitely not...but he re-defined the instrument maybe MORE than they did as crazy as that sounds...>Vai is very talented but most of the things he's done....are NOT original.  as I've gone back and listened to his work....he's basically like a computer...he will take things and then do them more crazy....but it's not very original....Flexible which at the time I thought....wow how the **** did he come up with this stuff...as I got more familiar with music outside of rock...I would find the songs he was riffing off of....so it was a little disappointing but again the guy has such crazy chops....it's fun to hear things run through the "Vai filter"

Morello has a style totally unique to him....no one did what he did...granted some of it became a joke after a while and his solos for audioslave were essentially pointless...but Rage Against the Machine during their heyday.....that was his prime moment of "genius"

I can see Billy Corgan doing something like this and would be entertaining as hell listening to him talk about how to carve the perfect Pumpkin for Halloween with other like-minded guitarists.

Actually, for It Might Get Loud 2, get George Lynch in the same room with Chet Atkins and Albert Lee and see who comes out on top.

hahaha trying to bait me.

I'd go Chris Degarmo over Lynch any day.

and the guy can sing like a song bird

:)

I was trying to think of any glam metal guitar player worthy of that movie....Slash was the only one who was close...and G N R was only glammy for about a year.

:)

Paul Gilbert would be fun...but most people wouldn't know him.

that's why my first list would be my personal pick.

I'm being totally serious here. Take every single guitar player we named in this thread, including the original 3 from the movie, put them all on an island, have Jeff Probst do his thing and watch the carnage paint the island red.

it's really a shame neither of us is mentioning Mr. Ace Frehley....but we'd need a time machine to go back to 1981...and about 1,000 bottles of booze and 50 pounds of coke ago.
