Face/Off

Trailer

The premise to Face/Off alone pretty much guaranteed that this movie would be a huge hit when it came out. I've lost count how many times I have seen this over the years and it still packs an emotional wallop for me. That's really saying a lot when describing what is basically an action movie from start to finish. But it's so much more than that. The two leads here elevate what should be a cheesy throw-away movie into an art-form in acting as well as visual film making. I may have issues with Nic Cage on a few of his films, but this is one that I think he just absolutely nails. Watch him bounce back and forth from Sean Archer to Castor Troy and you will see an actor in peak form. Not to be outdone, you have John Travolta who is just as mesmerizing throughout the entire film.

As for the visual flair of the film, John Woo's hand-prints are all over this one. It's got your typical Woo-ish: Slow-motion, Double barrel gunfights and dove imagery. Some Woo fans argue that his best American made film is Hard Target. Although I like that one, I think it pales next to Face/Off which I say is his best outside of Hong Kong. Having said that, his masterpieces still remain The Killer, Hard Boiled and A Better Tomorrow II.

Check your brain at the door and definitely Rent this one if you want something a little more than your typical Hollywood blockbuster. Personally I own this and will never get tired of watching this one. Love it. A definite Buy.

I loved this one too, for the shear energetic entertainment. I was rather impressed at how Cage and Travolta acted out each others personality
