Nip/Tuck (Season 5 - 2007)

Trailer

For me, Season 5 of Nip/Tuck is where the series 'Jumped the Shark'. It's one thing for a character, maybe 2, to move from Miami to Hollywood, but it's another thing for the entire business as well as a splintered family to relocate 2000 miles away and land in the same location. I only say this because in reality, this would NEVER happen, especially everyone having their own lives to live. With that said, there is still a lot to like about Season 5 for sure and it's definitely an upswing from the previous season for me. There are 2 reasons why this was a fun season to watch: Annalynne McCord and Bradley Copper make this an absolute must-watch season.

McCord is just awesome as the seasons temptress. But one thing I found very hard to get past is her very similar character Naomi that she portrays on 90210. As I said at the start of my Nip/Tuck marathon, it has been a long time since I sat down to watch all the episodes and this is well before 90210 was even an itch in someone's pants. So, she may have been playing Eden, but she was still Naomi to me. As for Bradley Cooper, you just have to see him in action to get all the fun he squeezes out from his Aidan Stone character. Talk about some seriously funny stuff. It's priceless. You can tell he was having a blast playing the character. As before, a lot of guest stars show up once again: Lauren Hutton, Sharon Gless, Oliver Platt, Daphne Zuniga, Tia Carrere, Marlee Matlin, Portia de Rossi, Donna Mills, Joan Van Ark, Shari Belafonte, Dina Meyer, Morgan Fairchild, Katee Sackhoff, John Schneider and Jennifer Coolidge, who by the way steals all 3 of her cameos for the season.

And now for some minor issues I have with this season. They aren't deal breakers, but it's frustrating regardless. I still don't like the way they handled Matt and Kimber. Hated it last season and even more so this season. The writers clearly don't know what to do with either character and have put so little into them that they literally disappear for long stretches where you actually forget they are even on the show at all. There's just too much start/stop with whatever they have going on with them and it never goes anywhere satisfying. The other thing that kinda bugs me is this seasons Finale. The series has always made a name for itself by being able to pull out whoppers season after season. Not this time. I get that Chrisitian getting the news that the hospital made a mistake him having cancer and realizing that he just made a mistake by marrying Liz is where they wanted to go. It just didn't have that "gotta tune in next season" wow factor of seasons past. Had they stuck to their usual 14 episodes per season, instead of expanding to 22 here, they would have had the ultimate Season Finale ender which was Colleen (Sharon Gless) stabbing Sean in the Operating Room and bleeding out. Now THAT was a great mid-season cliffhanger. Anyway, this season is still one to watch.  Now go Rent this sum b*tch!!

You know, it's four days after Nip/Tuck got removed from streaming that I realize "I need a reference pic of Escobar."  Though strangely now I don't remember WHY, but he was perfect for some role/character I had in my mind that's now escaped me.

It seemed real strange for them to go from being the big fish in Miami to the plankton in LA, but at least it raised the stakes somewhat.  I would have been fine if they had stayed in Miami, but I like the idea that the show wanted to expand and try new things (and build new sets... I got the impression this is about the time that the show actually had money to do things with).  It did strain credibility a bit when everyone else arrived over there too (especially when you watch all the episodes at once), but it'd also feel strange to just drop so much of the cast just like that.  And switching between Cali and Miami would have been... tiresome a bit, and makes it tough for the storylines to affect one another.

Getting back to Matt/Kimber story line. At least they had a plausible reason to end up in Cali since they were meth users and needed to suck on the teat (Sean and Christian) that could keep them afloat financially. But Liz, Linda, Annie and Julia just didn't make sense in a real world scenario. But I'm glad that they ended up there because to just drop them for the sake of "keeping it real" would have wrecked the series as you pointed out.

They were just sort of visiting and wound up staying (the rest of the family, that is).

You know, I honestly expected the Scientology angle to pay off in this season, like through blackmail or some other form of control.  That would have been interesting.  They never let go, you know.

I will say: I was horrified about what McCord was doing to the daughter, there's some people you don't mess with.
