Skyfall

Trailer

Finally got my copy of Skyfall from the Library yesterday. Damn, that was a long ass wait. In between getting a copy and the time it actually came out in the theater, I've had to endure hearing a lot of negative things about the movie. Not only that, most seem to think it's the worst James Bond flick in the Daniel Craig era. Um, I respectfully disagree. I will say however that there was one stretch of screen time that did however keep Skyfall from being an all time classic in my eyes. After the end of the Opening Gun Fight / Credits, there is a huge gap of time that was the longest set up ever. I'm guessing it was an hour at least before the Villain even reveals themself and their intent. I've never seen a Bond film that didn't have the Villain revealed within the first 15 minutes of the movie.

This is really the only thing I have a problem with. Everything falls into place as soon as Silva (Javier Bardem) comes on screen. I really liked his character as he is completely different from Villains of the past. I can't stand the model that seems to be "Super Rich Guy hellbent on ruling the World". Sure, Silva has the means to do just that, but at the end of the day, he is just a f*cked up psychopath (a former MI6 Operative) who sole purpose is to kill M (Judi Dench). I did a great job of avoiding spoilers the entire time (I didn't know a damn thing about the plot going into this), but watching the movie, I immediately knew that she would in fact die at the end. It was the only way it could end. Overall, I enjoyed Skyfall more than I thought I would, especially after all the comments about it. Definitely worth a Rent. It's definitely better than Quantum of Solace. Bonus points for putting Bond in a situation that forces him to use his 'MacGyver' skills instead of just having a bunch of fancy gadgets and toys to get him through his predicament. That was a breath of fresh air.

It's been a while for me, but after the big exciting opening sequence, isn't there ALWAYS a huge wait until the action kicks up again?  Pacific Rim felt the same way, even though that opening exciting action sequence seemed to last longer, it was still an HOUR before we had robots fighting again.

You know, I never really got into Bond with the old films, my dad took me to see a few but they never really caught my attention.  I did love the reboot with "Casino Royale."  I liked that idea of taking Bond to new territory and doing new things, but of course it's the 50th anniversary and the compulsion to pay homage to the originals is too hard to ignore, but g-d-m it p*ssed me off at the end because it seemed to take everything I liked about what they did to Bond and threw it away.  That really annoyed me, it didn't seem like a fresh start, it seemed like business as usual (compared to, say, the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary, which was able to pay homage to the past, do something new, and give the franchise a new direction going forth).

I loved the look of the flick, I'm actually a little crestfallen that Roger Deakins won't be lensing the next picture, this one looked SO good.  I dug the production design, that hotel in Macau, the boats with the little candles on it, the empty island with those big exposed computer things that would never work in the real world.  And I just loved the underground base, it reminded me of the one from the Bond parody film If Looks Could Kill with Richard Greico (yeah, I saw that one. Not PROUD of it).  I think that base was kind of perfect for the current Bond.  Of course we can't keep it.

I also liked the lack of gadgets, though I like the new Q and how they made him acceptably funny without his scene sticking out like it used to with Llewelyn or John Cleese (and I loved those scenes).  It was a more natural humour.

One thing I didn't like was... well, my sister and I were just kind of confused whenever Bernice whatshername appeared on screen (and grossed out by her fingernails, YUCK!), but really, I didn't like how many movie beats were just The Dark Knight.  That annoyed me.  And I did have higher hopes for what would happen to Naomie Harris' character, but... in hindsight I should have seen it coming.
