John Carter (2012)
« on: October 28, 2012, 06:58:50 am »

With all the negativity surrounding John Carter, and being dubbed the biggest flop for 2012 and one of the biggest bombs in the history of movies, I went into this with the lowest possible expectations one can have. First off, it's not as bad as people have made it out to be. Sure, there are a lot of problems with this movie. But there are actually some very cool things as well. Unfortunately the bad outweigh the good. I gave this film a very generous 3 Stars because even with the bad, I was kinda entertained despite its flaws. That's not to say there weren't moments that I was bored.

So, what do I talk about first? The good or the bad? The movie does deliver in the Special FX department. It does look fantastic, especially the Tharks. But this is also a problem. When you see this alien race, you are immediately reminded of Jar Jar Binks and that's one of the biggest problems with John Carter the movie. There are a lot of scenes that are taken directly from other films that call attention to itself, namely the Star Wars franchise. The other and definitely the biggest problem is the story itself....or lack of one. Whoever wrote this doesn't know the first thing about setups and writing characters. Everyone is so one-dimensional that you really don't care for them at all and are interchangeable with two warring factions, which itself is never really fully explained as to why they are at war. Throw in a 3rd 'God-like' race known as Therns who likes to manipulate other cultures in their namesake and you have a recipe for a giant clusterf*ck.

The ending, which by the way was the most compelling thing about the movie, has John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) looking for a way back to Mars, But first he has to stage his death and lure one of the Therns on Earth to reveal himself so that he can get the Medallion, which would allow him to return "home". Yes, the ending definitely sets up a sequel. But that my friend will never happen given all the criticism this one has generated worldwide. Anyway, just because a movie bombs, it doesn't necessarily mean that its un-watchable. It just means there was no audience to see it in the theaters. It just didn't click with audiences. I do think this is worth a Rent if your first, second or third choices in other movies can't be met.

John Carter DVD Screencaps

Maybe I'll post the scenes featuring  Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins).

I'm sure there are studies and expose on what the flop and big disappointment was. I forget what this costs to make. Maybe the the cost to profit percentage was the culprit. Maybe it was expectation. I think it had something to do with 'Disney'.

But yes, it was not horrible. It was entertaining in most places. I'd watch it again if it comes across my path.

I think there is a mindset that if a movie cost $200+ Million to make, and another $100 Million in advertising, when a movie under performs, "Critics" will jump on this and immediately say the movie sucks without really viewing it at all. They equate low box office as to mean that it's a horrible movie and I think that's part of the problem with Hollywood in general and most of these so-called "professional" Critics that get paid to rate movies. You get a couple of them to say it's a sh*tty movie and then the public gloms onto this and can't make up their own minds. Sheep's.
