Lady in the Water
Widescreen Edition

Trailer

My "Movies by M. Night Shyamalan that I've refused to watch until now" marathon continues. Up next we have Lady In The Water. I was more curious about whether the hatred for this movie were justified than anything else. In a word....yes. There are so many things wrong with the movie that it's hard to pin point what the biggest problem is...or so I thought. The one thing that really irked me about this one is M. Night Shyamalan himself. This is without a doubt one of the most self-indulgent, ego-driven films ever. Look, I can accept the fact that he likes to give himself cameos in all his films. But this one did cross the line by giving himself a pretty "big part". One has to be really full of themselves to write a character that is a novelist and is more or less going to "Change the world" for the better because of his writing. Do you see how bad this is and how bad it makes him look in real life? I would be embarrassed to write something so indulgent as that.

As for the 'story' itself, it's about as lame as one can get. It's beyond boring. It's all over the place and really does defy logic that seems to be based in "reality". How come none of the characters question the logic of what is happening? Why does each character just accept it as part of their world? I really don't even know what the story was or what the f*cking purpose of it all is. My mind kept drifting throughout the movie as I kept losing my focus, much like the film itself did.

This is definitely a Skip and all the hate that is out there for Lady In The Water is much deserved. It's just unfortunate that whatever momentum Bryce Dallas Howard had from her performance in The Village came to a screeching halt with this one. Not her fault mind you. She just had the bad luck of getting roped into half-baked "Horror / Fairy Tale" that doesn't deliver on either accounts. My 1 Star rating is only for the fact that I made it all the way through. I seriously looked long and hard at anything else that I could hang another star on....but I couldn't.

One last thing, other than every scene that had M. Night in it, I absolutely HATED Bob Balaban's character breaking the 4th wall to explain the "rules of character". It's the way he is saying it that  p i s s e d  me off because it was condescending to the viewer and since the words are being spoken by a certain someone that wrote the damn script, it's basically M. Night trying to impress everyone in his ability to "know what makes a good character and how a typical horror scene should play out'". This was done to better effect in Scream because it was done with a winking nod. Normally when I watch something as bad as this, I will search out other reviews after I write mine to see if others see the same things I found fault with. But I really don't care enough to even bother after this one.....So I will just be content to hear your reviews and leave it at that.

One last thing. The ending SUCKED Donkey Balls!!! No offense to any Donkey's that may read this.

Well this Donkey is not offended. Another movie by M. I have chosen to forget very quickly.

That's a huge problem for me are characters glossing over the obvious. At least write some reality into human condition.

Oh Chiiiiiiip, his work gets even worse, er nefarious

Note: I had to look up nefarious, another word for crap
