A while back on one of the DVD's I checked out, they had the Trailer for
Premium Rush and it was good enough to sell me on adding it to my
Hold List. That was about 3 months ago. That's how long it took to get a copy of the movie. Sheesh! The
Trailer is great, the movie on the other hand...not so much. It's called
Premium Rush, but a more fitting title would be
Mediocre Static. The movie just never takes flight in the way the
trailer depicts it. It's not a bad movie, it just doesn't ever get out of first gear.
The credibility of the movie is undermined by a weak villain. As good as
Michael Shannon is in other things, he was totally miscast here. Well, maybe if he brought the same type of character he portrays on Boardwalk Empire, this could have been something great. But in this one, the character he plays is no more of a threat then a Clown handing out balloons. He is dumb, stupid and just overall clueless. Never once did I feel that the other characters were ever in any kind of serious danger.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was okay in the lead role for what it was. Nothing to write home about.
Dania Ramirez was okay as well. I feel bad for
Jamie Chung having to use a stereotypical dialect with broken English. I get that her character is from a Foreign land and has only be in the United States for 3 years, but still. I have to imagine that she felt strange speaking like that because he comes off pretty bad to me.
Anyway, this is just on okay movie. Worth a
Rent at best. One thing to keep in mind is that the story told through the fractured narrative. Best exmaple of this style of story-telling can be found in
go, which itself has been called
Pulp Fiction-Lite.
