Lone Survivor

Trailer

It says a lot about how Media can play a huge role in how military decisions are made based on the fear of being tried in the court of public opinion and Lone Survivor is a clear example of where the line is drawn in the Rules of Engagement. This true story follows a 4 Man Seal Team, tracking a High Priority Hard Target Taliban leader. They have him in their sights and in a million to one shot, the team is discovered by a few goat herders. The American's capture them and have 3 options. Cut them loose and make a run for it. Tie them up and make a run for it or kill them all and keep the mission alive. The fact that they feared that if they killed them, CNN would vilify them and their reputations would be forever tarnished. So, by taking the high road and letting them go, they basically signed their own death warrant.

What follows next is an intense fire fight against an unrelenting horde of Taliban fighters. As much as you cheer on the Americans it comes down to a Lone Survivor/Marcus Luttrell as played by Mark Wahlberg. The movie is very brutal in its depiction of violence. Beyond the bullet hits, compound fractures and shrapnel, war is just an ugly thing in this world. But out of this ugliness we see that not all people in Afghanistan are evil. It comes down to a village that basically shelters and protects Marcus Luttrell in the end against their own countrymen.....the Taliban.

Great cast also includes Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana with exceptional direction by Peter Berg makes this movie a winner in my eyes. Highly recommend this as a Rent. I for one would definitely watch this again if I stumble upon it while channel surfing. If I saw a used DVD copy on sale and it was cheap, I'd most likely Buy it. Would make a great double feature alongside Black Hawk Down. Loved the opening montage showing real footage of Navy Seal training and seeing how easily people quite and how rewarding it is for those that survive and pass. Love the Music Score. Very reminiscent of Friday Night Lights....also tied directly to Peter Berg.

A pretty amazing film in so many ways. Not a war movie fan, and this was hard to watch, for the brutality of war Chip discusses.

I don't remember about the decision because of the media. I missed that and it does make sense in an unfair way.

I wish we (Ametica) would do more like this group of guys, but keep the media and public noses out of it.
