When I first heard that they were rebooting
RoboCop, I was marginally interested. I was curious to see what they could do with such an iconic character with better Special FX at hand. But at no time did I ever think they would come close to the
Original. It was an instant classic and it has only gotten better with time. I think it's one of the best Sci-Fi films of all time. So, my expectations for the Reboot were fairly low. But I did not think it would be as bad as it turned out to be. They basically striped everything that made the
Original what is was and gave us some lame, homogenize take on
Alex Murphy / RoboCop. For starters, everything about actor
Joel Kinnaman and the character lacks any kind or personality. A Wet Mop exudes more personality. Don't even get me started on the stupid revisioning of the Armor Suit. He looks like some
G.I. Joe reject. But it was the story that really does the movie harm.
Having
Murphy with all knowledge from the start and having his Wife and Boy know he is alive pretty much takes all the fun out of it. What made the
Original tick was watching
Murphy slowly regain his memory about what had happened to him and what he lost because of it. With everyone still all connected in some way, it lacks any kind of climatic moment at the end. Another thing that this one lacks is a clear villain. Sure
Michael Keaton turns out to be bad at the end and it's expected. But in the
Original, we had a slew of bad guys that we wanted to see get their just due. Sorry, but this one failed.
Skip this and just go watch
Peter Weller show you how it's done.
