Man of Science, Man of Faith

When this first came out, Season 2 couldn't get here fast enough for me. I just had to see what was inside the Hatch. Even watching this for what seems like the 100th time, it still delivers for me in a lot of ways. I love how it opens the episode. We are led to believe that this is someones flashback sequence. So when it's revealed that this cozy confines of a home in in fact the inside of the Hatch, it just blew me away. I also liked how they introduced Desmond to the viewer by way of Jacks' flashback so that when we see Jack's reaction to recognizing Desmond as the occupant of the Hatch, it just.....AWESOME!!

Any doubts that I may have had about where Lost was going, especially after the Season ending cliffhanger of Exodus, all those fears immediately went away as I knew that Season 2 was going to be a thrill ride, one that I did not want to miss out on.

One interesting thing about this episode is that it only deals with one half of the 2 cliffhangers from last season. The Michael, Jin and Sawyer cliffhanger will be addressed next in its own episode.

Adrift

The season premiere was so good that they decided to rerun it again. Like I said in the last post, this one would focus more on the other cliffhanger from last season but with a twist. We get the whole Michael and Sawyer arc of them trying to stay alive on a raft out in the middle of the ocean, but we are also treated to the same episode from before. Actually it's just what was happening at the same time  between the both. In this we see Locke and Kate and their introduction to Desmond which takes us all the way to the same cliffhanger when Jack realizes he knows Desmond.

But what this episode does right is that it also introduces us to the "Others" as Jin has escaped captivity and is trying to warn Michael and Sawyer who is hot on his and their trail. Good stuff, but also frustrating that we would have to wait another week to get a resolution to what happened previously. Ah, to be a fan of Lost...............

Orientation

Great episode that introduces us to the concept of the Dharma Initiative and the idea of pushing a button every 108 minutes. That's a pretty big leap of faith for any rationale man that just stumbled upon the hatch and what secrets lay within. Also cool was the introduction of Mr. Eko, even though he has yet to give his name because they are still trying to assess who Michael, Sawyer and Jin are.

I mentioned in the Season 1 thread how much I started to dislike John Locke. Well, take all those headstrong characteristics of that season and multiply it by a hundred and you will have an idea of how annoying he is in this episode. In his flashbacks he is annoying, hunting down his "father" for an answer as to why he stole his kidney. Does it matter? He stole it. Either kick his ass or move on, but don't sit around letting life past you by when the object of your hatred could care less.

Katey Segal's first appearance as John Locke's love interest also happens in this episode.

Everybody Hates Hugo

I like the episode and I like the character of Hurley. He does have a very valid issue regarding becoming the 'Food Police'. I don't know if I would want to do that job myself because I too would have that fear of being hated just by the simple act of rationing the food so that it last longer. But those that want the food or whatever else items they want will of course think differently and shoot the messenger...Hurly.

Mr. Eko and company come to the realization that Michael, Sawyer and Jim are in fact from the same flight, but that doesn't stop Ana-Lucia and Sawyer from bickering like an old married couple. I liked the ending when Bernard asking Michael if he knew a "Rose" back at his camp. The look of relief on his face when he was told that she was OK was priceless.

Props to Kate for taking a shower. Too bad they never showed it on screen. Bah!!

...And Found

Basically this is about both Sun and Jin searching for something in their past as well as on the Island. In the flashback sequences, Sun is searching for a Husband while Jin is searching for his place in the world. On the Island, Sun is searching for her lost wedding ring while Jin is searching for Michael who has gone off searching for Walter. It's a very solid episode from start to finish. We also get to see a little bit of the Others. Not too much, but enough to whet the appetite.

Abandoned

The beginning of the end for Shannon as this is where she meets her demise at the hands of Ana-Lucia. Wasn't her fault as she thought it was the Others that were pursuing her and she only reacted to what came out of the Jungle. The episode was okay, but I just wasn't a fan of the flashback sequences that much. The interesting thing here is why and how Walt keeps popping up to warn Shannon, but then takes off without saying anything.

Charlie is reeeeeeally starting to annoy me, especially when it comes to giving Claire parenting advice. When did he become Aaron's "father"?

The Other 48 Days

For an episode that doesn't have any of the "original" cast members of Lost on it, this is a pretty riveting hour. Up till now, we have only been told what happened during the first 48 days since the crash and how the survivors of the back of the plane were picked up by the 'Others'. The entire episode is in flashbacks and it leads us all the way back to the standoff where Shannon is shot and Sayid is looking for some serious payback. Excellent episode from start to finish.

Collision

This one is all about Ana Lucia. Come to think of it, it seems like the last 5 episodes have been all about her. Anyway, while Ana has Sayid tied up to a tree as her prisoner, her flashbacks reveal a lot about her and why she is the way she is. She is very unhinged and it has to do with her being shot, losing her unborn baby in the process. She eventually gets her revenge, but it comes at a price....her soul. She is now forever haunted. Fantastic episode. Loved the reunion between Jin and Sun & Bernard and Rose.

Fun fact: I always get a chuckle every time I see Michael Cudlitz playing a Cop. I've never seen anyone else come close to playing the same character over and over and over.........

What Kate Did

A good episode. But it did have a couple of slow spots. This one was about....what Kate did to have the law chasing her down. Although the arc itself wasn't all that original, the twist was good in that the stepfather that Kate blew up to protect her mother was in fact her real father. Only other thing of note came at the end when "Walter" sent his dad a message on the computer. Of course this will set Michael off chasing the carrot to find him.

The 23rd Psalm

Awesome episode where we finally get the lowdown on Mr. Eko and his past and what his destiny is on the Island. We also, FINALLY, get to see the Smoke Monster up close and personal and Mr. Eko literally comes face to face with it....and doesn't back down. I like that Eko was ordering Charlie around. I can't stand people that have no problems telling other people what to do or moralizing when he is in fact the biggest hypocrite carrying around a statue full of  h e r o i n .

The Hunting Party

Although it was cool to finally "meet" one of the others, 'Nice Guy' Tom Friendly and get some much needed "answers", overall the episode was just okay for me. Seeing Jack's marriage falling apart by way of flashbacks was a screeching halt to whatever momentum we were getting. I know it's suppose to she light on his character and how it plays out on the Island. I just think they could and should have saved that particular story arc for another time. I did like that at the end Jack approaches Ana Lucia about training an Army so they can better protect themselves from the Others.

Fire + Water

A lot of running around in circles in this episode and the fact that it's centered around Charlie is not good either. He has always been my least favorite character on Lost and watching him obsess over Claire and Aaron becomes both pitiful and annoying. So, what happens here? Um, he kidnaps Aaron....twice. He burns down the field adjacent to their camp. He gets caught by John with his hand in the collective  h e r o i n  jar. He gets his ass kicked. Not a memorable episode for sure. One good thing though is that Hurley and Libby have started down their eventual relationship.

The Long Con

Even though nothing really happens as far as advancing the plot forward, The Long Con is an exceptional episode for Sawyer. We get to see how he uses the con both in the flashbacks and on the Island. His con of John Locke was particularly satisfying because his moralizing is getting on my nerves. He likes to come off as the smartest man on the Island, but he isn't. He is easily duped by not just bySawyer, but by his birth parents as well, which shows a history of being dumb to fall for anything. Even though I hate Charlie more, there was something cool about him getting back a John and making him look like an idiot and a fool in front of the others.

One of Them

Other than the Pilot episode, this is the one I have been looking forward to the most. Why? Because it's the introduction of "Henry Gale" Ben Linus (Michael Emerson). He would turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to the Lost mythology and this is ground zero. As much as this episode is about him, it was also centered on Sayid as we see where and who he learned his torture technique from. Pretty cool that it turned out to be Clancy Brown's character that had a hand in this. Another awesome moment is when Jack uses the "threat of the button" to get him to open up the armory, the place being used to torture Ben. Amazing episode.
