I'm a huge fan of
Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Christian Slater and
Alan Rickman in other films. On paper
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves should be an awesome movie. But what we get is a very average movie that is aging badly over the years, especially when you compare it to the likes of
Braveheart or
Gladiator. How can an All-Star cast produced something so sub-standard? When they say it all starts with the written word, there's a lot of merit to that. No matter how many Prime Time Actors you put into a movie, if the story is all over the place it's not gonna matter who says the lines.
Back when I saw this in the theater, the movie had some serious flaws. I really don't know why I bought the DVD when it was first release. I think this was back when I was buying anywhere from 3-5 new DVD's each week because the DVD format was new and exciting and grabbed this just for the sake of having it. I dunno. In hindsight I shouldn't have. I've only watched this two or three times since then. About the only good thing in the movie was
Alan Rickman as
George, Sheriff of Nottingham, but even he played the role a bit too comedic for my taste. I don't know if the humor was intentional or not, but it does make it hard to take the movie serious when he is hamming it up as much as he does here.
The best moment in the entire movie comes at the end when
Sean Connery makes an uncredited cameo. Other than that, it's really hard to want to watch this ever again. It's got some cool stuff here and there, but isn't going to elevate it higher than
3 stars for me. This is nothing more than a
Rental and only if you have exhausted all your other movie picks first.
