A Tale of Two Cities

I eargerly awaited Season 3 to see what they would give us. I did NOT see the opening coming at all. I remember the first time watching it that I just assumed it was a flashback on American soil or wherever. But when they revealed that this little suburb with the book club was in fact on the Island, I just......Wow. There is no predicting this show at all. You can't peg Lost because it's unlike anything that's ever been presented to us on TV. I was very satisfied for sure. So, we get a new character in the form of Juliet, who doesn't seem to bow down to "Henry" who we learn is really Ben. There is definitely some animosity between the two.

The Glass Ballerina

Episode is good, not great. We see that Sun has a habit of lying to Jin a lot. By way of flashback it's revealed that she did in fact have an affair with another man and of course lied to Jin. Also, on the Island she sides with Sayid in keeping Jin under wraps about starting the fire, not for Jack, but in the hopes The Others see it. I thought this was kind of spinning their wheels. Best part of the episode was Kate and Sawyer on the chain gang and Jack learning that the Red Sox have won the World Series, proving that Ben does in fact have contact with the outside world.

Further Instructions

This one was never what I would call a good episode. In actuality it's nothing more than an above average one that revolves around John going off into the jungle to save Mr. Eko from the Polar Bear that has captured him. Yep, sounds just as weak writing about it. That's all this one is. Even the flashback scenes were worthless, other than to show how anyone and everyone is able to easily manipulate him without even trying. The only saving grace for this episode is the revelation at the end that Desmond can see into the future as a result of the Hatch imploding around him. It was cool to see Boone return in Locke's drug infused dream.

Every Man for Himself

This is an awesome episode. We learn a lot of stuff about the location and what Jack's reason for being there may in fact be. The whole 'con' that Ben uses to Sawyer to subdue him and make him compliant to ever trying to escape or create a ruckus was a nice bit of trickery. The whole rabbit/pacemaker gag seemed to do the trick. So much so that Sawyer literally takes a beating from Pickett for fear of raising his heartbeat. But the reveal at the end was a big one when Ben shows Sawyer that they aren't even on the same Island that we have come to expect, but a 2nd Island that is far enough to even attempting to swim to.

Also, Jack figures out that his capture is in fact so that he can operate on someone (he doesn't know it's Ben yet) and that it's a life threatening illness. Awesome episode all around. Even Sawyer's flashbacks scenes were good. We learn he has a newborn baby; Clementine. Really cool to see Ian Gomez (Cougar Town) and Bill Duke (Predator) in this one.

Desmond ftw for building a weather vane, courtesy of his sight-seeing abilities into the future!

The Cost of Living

This episode could also be called 'Goodbye, Mr. Eko' since his is the last we will see of the character. This is Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje swan song as his character is written off the show. But at least they made his exit a memorable one in that we finally get to see what the Smoke Monster is capable of. The episode is basically about redemption and confessing ones sins and we think that by the end of the episode, Mr. Eko will finally repent for his. He does not, and that's what seals his fate, leading the Smoke Monster to attack and kill him. Why? Because Mr. Eko's soul could not be saved. A fantastic episode that also sheds like on Ben and his need for Jack to operate on him. But even more revealing was Juliet giving him (and us) insight into who Ben really is.....a liar.

If there is one negative for me about this episode is that they basically drove in the final nail in killing off everyone that was part of the 'Tallies' (the other half of the plane that landed on the other side of the Island). Sure there is still Bernard, but his character never had much to do on the series, so he doesn't count. But Ana Lucia, Libby, Eko......all gone. *Sigh*

I Do

Nice build up for the entire episode leading to the cool twist where Jack finally gets the upper hand his Captor's when he uses Ben as his way to free Kate and Sawyer. When I this air originally, I don't remember if I saw the twist coming. I do remember going "hell yeah" when it played itself out. Also, Kate and Sawyer finally hook up in a Polar Bear cage! Who hasn't had that fantasy doing it in a Polar Bear cage before?

Not in Portland

We learn how and why Juliet was recruited to the Island by way of flashbacks (duh), but the meat and bones of this episode is Kate and Sawyer's escape off the Island. But the biggest twist at the end is when it's revealed that Juliet herself has been held on the Island against her will for over 3 years. Great episode.

Flashes Before Your Eyes

This episode is what I would say is the first one to really stretch the idea of what Lost was and / or could be. The bulk of the episode is all a flashback. Well, not really. As Desmond recounts the moments that followed after turn the fail-safe key, he is immediately back into his real life as if he had never been on the Island. The twist is that even though he is living his old life, he is seeing bits and pieces of his future on the Island. But the twist at the end that elevates this one is when Desmond reveals that he wasn't trying to save Claire, but was in fact saving Charlie....twice, and that his fate is already sealed.

Stranger in a Strange Land

This is not one of my favorite episodes of Lost. It's actually one of the worst. Why? Bai Ling. Need I say more? As for the rest of the episode, it's more of the same with Jack bartering his skills as a Doctor to save Juliet's life who is set to be executed for trying to have Ben killed. They head back "home".....on the main Island.

Tricia Tanaka is Dead

The episode literally starts off with a bang when we finally get to see what Hurley was talking about with regards to the Meteor blowing up the place where he worked at, thus giving way to the title of the episode. In spite of this dark turn of events, the episode does have a feel good tone to it, especially at the end when Hurley, Charlie, Sawyer and Jin are able to get the Dharma VW Bus up and running again. Nice cliffhanger at the end when Kate tells Danielle that she found her long lost daughter, Alex.

Enter 77

This use to be a favorite episode of mine, but it has lost its appeal with each viewing in large part because of Locke. The guy is just so easily swayed and tempted. He is like a little child, always having to get his hands into everything. Leave it to him to blown up The Flame Station because he has to punch numbers into a computer. I didn't realize just how much of a tool and and idiot this guy was till I started this Lost marathon.

Par Avion

A couple of big twist are revealed in this one. Actually, one very BIG twist and one very BIG cliffhanger that had me going "what the f*ck" the first time I saw this one. With this one having Claire at the forefront, it's revealed that she and Jack share the same father! Holy crap!! Kate, Sayid, John and Danielle make their way to the 'Others' home turf, first having to get by the Pylons (very cool). But it's at the end when they arrive at their mini town and they see Jack playing catch with the football with 'Nice Guy' Tom that totally had me scratching my head. What was the deal? Brainwashed? Drugged? Zombie? Oh man, that was a great cliffhanger indeed!!

The Man from Talahassee

Epic. That's how I would sum up this episode in one word. I may trash John Locke a lot, especially during this Lost marathon of mine and rightly so. But that doesn't take away from the fact that one of the best cliffhangers of the series involves John. When Ben reveals who is in the closet and that it turns out to be John's father, I just about fell out of my chair the first time I watched this. How? HOW?! AWESOME!!! Also, we finally get to see the rest of John's past and how he ended up in a wheelchair, which makes the cliffhanger all the more meaningful to John and what's certainly going to come next.

Not a fan of this episode at all. It's not that it was bad, it's just that it was pointless and a wasted hour to tell a story about 2 people who got shoved down our throats from the beginning of Season 3. Who the hell ae Nikki and Paulo? In a blatant attempt by the writers to inject new characters into the storyline of Lost, all it did was derail the core group of characters. They never fit in at all and it was just odd to see new faces in the mix.

As for the episode, it was good for one reason alone and that was the chance to revisit the Island from their perspective and see some old favorite characters and moments from the first 2 seasons. Shannon, Boone, Mr. Arntz return in flashbacks and we get to see the other side of famous moments in the series. The most telling aspect of the episode and the characters is that they knew a lot more about things on the Island like the beech plane, the Observation Station, the existence of both Ben and Juliet and the lagoon with the briefcase long before anyone else.

I for one am glad these two characters are done with the show and it made the ending all the more pleasing when we discover they are both being buried alive.  Because these two are so unlikable, we have no choice but to cheer how they go out. At the end of the day, no amount of glee at their demise can cover up the fact that the writers found another way to NOT move the story forward. Another stall tactic.
