The Beginning of the End

I remember how long and excruciating the wait was between the end of Season 3 and the start of Season 4. The way they ended it on last season's cliffhanger had me on edge, waiting for the premiere and did The Beginning of the End ever deliver. Even now, having watched this episode a few times over, it still delivers. The whole arc with Hurley in the flash-forward, ending up in the Nut house and leaving us with the idea that he, Jack and Kate (so far) did something terribly wrong on the Island before getting rescued sets up Season 4 in a way that piqued my curiosity like never before. Everything I knew or thought I knew about the series went out the door with this episode in particular. And the fact that they brought Charlie back changed the playing field for what the series and more importantly who Hurley was, was in fact a game changer.

I thought it was good to have a tribe divided with half the people going off with John Locke and the other half siding with Jack. Awesome episode.

Confirmed Dead

Picking up right were they left off in the last episode, we get a series of flashbacks regarding Daniel, Miles, Charlotte and Frank, the crew sent in to "rescue" the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815. But it's not till the end where it really kicks up a notch when we find out they are really there for Ben instead. But why? Good stuff.

The Economist

A lot of double crossing going on in this one, each one bigger than the last. The bulk of this one follows Sayid in the Flashforward and Isla, the women he is targeting. He is after her mysterious Boss, who we don't know yet. But the twist is that she is after his boss, who we don't know at the moment. It's not till the very end, after Sayid has been shot by her that he shows up at a Pet Clinic to get stiched up. It's then that it's revealed that his boss is none other than Ben. What the hell! That's a cliffhanger.

Eggtown

This one was actually kind of a meh episode. The Flashfoward scenes detail Kate's trial for the crimes she commited prior to the plane crash. And the scenes on the Island were only slightly better with the meeting between Miles and Ben. It's only at the very end of the episode that they hit us with a whooper of a cliffhanger: Kate's "son" is Aaron. The same Aaron who is the child of Claire. WTF!

The Constant

The Constant is an awesome episode about Time Travel regarding Desmond. They briefly did the whole 'Time Travel' thing back in Flashes Before Your Eyes back in Season 3,  but it wasn't clear just what was happening. In this one it's spelled out in great detail by Faraday, the man behind the ability to Travel through Time by way of your subconscious.

Even if you are a Lost fan that didn't like the whole Time Travel aspect to the series, there is no denying that this was a hell of an episode. The emotional connection the viewer gets at watching Desmond and Penny reconnect on the phone was 'off the hook'. Sorry, I had to say that. There is a reason why this episode is considered to be the best in the entire run of the series. The performance by Henry Ian Cusick was nothing short of brilliant and Sonya Walger who gave this episode it's heart as Penny. Just amazing.

The Other Woman

More back-story involving Juliet, Goodwin and a very jealous Ben. Nothing really happens other than Locke frees Ben to roam around without handcuffs because he showed him a videotape of a very bad man by the name of Charles Widmore. Other than that, not much else went down. Kind of a 'ket-down' episode after the Epic Constant episode just before this one.

Ji Yeon

Another brilliant episode where the writers pulled a switch-a-roo on the viewer. So far this season, all the scenes involving everything off the Island has been a Flashforward. But in this one, we are led to believe that is still the status quo as Sun is on the verge of having a baby, as Jin scrambles to find a stuffed Panda Bear and rushes to the Hospital. It's not till the very end is it revealed that Sun is in the Flashforward and Jin is in a Flashback. The corker is when Hurley, Sun and new baby daughter Ji Yeon had to the cementary to Jin's grave sight. This episode, no matter how many times I watch it, still packs and emotional wallop. Not to be outdone, this also has the re-appearance of Michael....on the boat of all places.

Meet Kevin Johnson

If you want to watch a Lost episode that is 100% captivating, this is the one. Sure, it will help if you have seen all the episodes of the series leading up to this one to get the full effect. This episode delievers big time as the bulk of the episode is all flashback as we follow "Kevin Johnson", or more precisely, Michael. We see the missing time that fans of the show were curious to know about once he and Walt were sent home from the Island after being released by Ben. We learn that Walt has disowned Mciahael after his father told him about killing Ana Lucia and Libby. We see that no matter how hard he tries, Michael can't kill himself because the Island won't let him. We see that 'Nice Guy' Tom as well as Ben have been tracking his whereabouts. And we see how he came to be on the Boat that Sayid and Desmond are currently on and what his purpose is. Very good.

As good as that was, the cliffhanger was even better. An unknown assassin shoots and kills Karl and Danielle. Wow. We end on Alex who is surrendering to an unknown assailant. But who is it? Stay tuned.............

Always cool to see Libby.

The Shape of Things to Come

A crazy and wacky episode that was hopping all over the place. It wasn't clear what and how Ben shows up in the middle of the desert (it will be explained later), but this was the first instance of Ben traveling through time to meet up with Sayid and get him to kill the man that murdered his wife Nadia. Ben sure knows how to manipulate and play people like a fiddle. It's easy for him. Back on the Island, the men shooting the guns are of course from the boat and use Alex as a bargaining chip to get Ben to surrender. Doesn't work. She is executed, which I wasn't expecting to happen the first time I saw this episode.

The ending was very interesting and veeeeeeeery cryptic. I of course speak of the meeting between Ben and Charles Widmore.

Something Nice Back Home

The Flashforward tracks Jack and Kate living together and their engagement. Back on the Island, we see when Kate realizes that Jack is in love with her, all while dealing with the fact that he has to have emergency surgery for appendicitis. The ending was another one of those crazy wtf endings with Claire disappearing into the Jungle night with Jack's father (and her's) Christian Sheppard. Back in the Flashfoward there is another cliffhanger in Kate doing something for Sawyer, but she won't tell Jack (or the TV viewing audience) exactly what it was. Great episode.

Cabin Fever

A very eye opening episode where we learn a lot about John Locke by way of Flashbacks. Yep, I said Flashbacks. About 98% of Season 4 has been dedicated to Flashforwards. But in this case we go all the way back to when John is born and it's around the age of 8 years old when he gets a visitor from a man. That man's name is Richard Alpert. Yup, THAT Richard Alpert. Still the same age. So, it's clear that John has been a prize that he and the 'Island' having been tracking for a very long time.

The rest of the episode is about John, Ben and Hurley trying to find Jacob's Cabin. It's who is waiting on the inside that has you going what....the.....helll when we see Christian Sheppard and Claire waiting for John. Fade to black......

Cliffhanger.

Bah!!

Great episode.

There's No Place Like Home (Part 1, 2 & 3)

All season long you knew they were building up to something epic with the Season Finale. But even I wasn't prepared for what came of it the first time it aired. Even now, it's beyond epic that leaves you with one hell of a cliffhanger. I think it still delivers for me on a lot of different levels. I love that they open it with the six of them getting rescue, which immediately starts my mind spinning: Why only 6? Where is everyone else? Both parts are like onions slowly being peeled away and by the end you come to see how it was just the 6 and where everyone else is. But that isn't the kicker. It's what comes next that leaves you with a hell of a cliffhanger for the next season. At the start of Season 4, we are asking ourselves "who is in the coffin?" Well, that answer comes at the very end when it's revealed that it's John Locke.

So, what else went down in this 3 parter? Well, Jack learns that Claire is his half-sister, Michael and Jin die when the boat blows up, Walt returns,Sawyer throws himself out of the helicopter to save the others, Desmond and Penny are reunited as are Sayid and Nadia and Ben literally makes the Island disappear. Yup, that's what you call packing in a lot of stuff for a Season Finale.

Lost (Season 4)

I will go on record as saying that Season 4 is fantastic. I get that a lot of people just did not care for it in large part because of the added Time Traveling element to the Lost mythology. I for one thought it was needed. Lost isn't a show that you can say is predictable, but had it stayed in the same mindset of Season 1 and Season 2, it would have gotten stale in my eyes. So, having Faraday, Miles, Charlotte and Frank joining in on the fun made this abbreviated season a fun and awesome ride. I highly recommend this as a Buy, which I already own.
