Mad Max
Special Edition

Trailer

I will be the first to admit that I absolutely hated Mad Max (Mel Gibson) when I saw it. Really? Hated it? Yeah. But there is a reason for that. I didn't get into the series until The Road Warrior, which I absolutely loved. Sh*t man, I played that movie over and over and over. As I remember it, I don't even think I really even knew that Mad Max existed before that. Maybe I heard the name or something prior, but it never stuck and I never made the connection between either film. It was only when doing some research (long before there was internet) did I happen to find out about it. So naturally I rented it on VHS from my local Blockbuster (or some other chain before there was a BB). I was pumped and excited to see the first installment.

To say that I was hugely disappointed in Mad Max is putting it lightly. I don't even think I made it all the way through the film the first time around. While watching the movie, I was scratching my head as if I had lice that had dandruff on it because nothing made sense to me. This was nothing like The Road Warrior!! I guess I was just expecting more of the same and certainly set in a post apocalyptic world as Road Warrior was. For me, Mad Max took many years for me to warm up to it. It's still not polished movie by any stretch. There are still a few edits that just make no sense and make it look amateurish at times. The "story" is kind of undefined. And the acting by the biker goons at times is way over the top. It's not until the final 30 minutes does it begin to shape up into the character that we all love in The Road Warrior.

If you want to see where Max originates from, you definitely need to check this out, but you have to keep an open mind about the setting and the way the movie is shot. It's not an american production, so it doesn't have all the trappings of a Hollywood film, which The Road Warrior and Thunderdome have. Definitely worth a Rent. Had you asked me this 30 years ago I would have given you a resounding Skip.
