Mad Men (Season 1)

Trailer

Like a lot of shows, this fell through the cracks for me. Not because I didn't want to watch it, it was just the odd man out with a ton of other shows on my plate. Now, over the years I kept hearing how great Mad Men was and all that did was fan the flame of my anticipation of getting around to it. Well, here we are, 6 seasons behind. So, did this live up to the hype. In a word..... f u c k  yeah! Okay, two words. This is one of the most authentic shows I've seen in years. It looks and feels exactly as it would be in the 60's about an Ad Agency and the men that run it. Stylistically this is top shelf and is on par with Hollywood Blockbusters that put out the same type of movie....when they actually do that is.

This is a TV series that is centered around Characters and dialog. Do not go into this expecting a lot of set pieces. There isn't any to be found. Everything is moved forward by dialog and the pool of very interesting and diverse characters that make up this world. As great as the actors are and the words that are being spoken snaps with zing, there isn't one likable character to be found anywhere here. This struck me as strange as I was watching all of Season 1 from episode to episode. How can I be this into a show and not like one person? It wasn't until the 11th episode did I manage to think of another show that had the same situation play out. That show of course was The Sopranos. In both cases, you may not like the people your watching, but you damn well can't take your eyes off of them.

If you haven't see this, I highly recommend that you do. It's THAT good! For me this is definitely a Buy to add to my personal DVD library.

Mad Men took me quite a few seasons before I gave it a watch.  I was the only person at work who didn't watch it (or smoke, I wonder if those two things are connected).  But I saw it about two years ago and totally got into it.  It's streaming on Netflix but for some reason I only get into it on Blu-Ray.  Go figure.

I totally agree with Penn Jilette's review of the show "I love it, but I have NO IDEA what it's about."  And I have to rewatch it because I totally missed Allison Brie and Larisa Oleynik in there.

And I think this is the only part January Jones could play, a disaffected ice queen.  Who looks pretty good in complicated lingerie, which I'm sure is the only reason she was cast in X-Men First Class.

I really didn't know what to expect from Mad Men. Sure, I heard about the show over the years, but I would mentally and physically tune out to avoid spoilers. I didn't want to know anything. So, in the ensuing years, I kind of "saw" what the show would be. It was like nothing I had envisioned in my head. It was better than that.

That theme is perpetually stuck in my head.

My first encounter with Mad Men was either the Simpsons episode or their appearance on SNL when Jon Hamm hosted for the first time.

Incidentally, what did you think the show was going to be?

As great as Jon Hamm is in this one, who has a very interesting backstory in Season 1, I was by far more intrigued with what was going on with January Jones' character. I think she OWNED Season 1 to put it bluntly.

Well, I knew that it took place in the 60's at an Ad Agency, but I for whatever reason, I thought it was going to be 'light' and campy as in more of a caricature of what the 60's were and not so literal in recreating that time and feel down to every last detail, if that makes any sense.

I dug JJ in the first season, I was curious to see what would happen with her but she's no good outside of that part... and I heard she made the kids cry on set.

Okay, so maybe you were thinking it would be more along the lines of Catch Me If You Can?

Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala..........

I had to stop reading once it looked like you made reference to seasons beyond Season 1 regarding January. Avoiding spoilers, not matter how small or trivial it may be.

No worries, I barely remember anything that happened in any of the seasons.  It was just one long mellow experience.

Watching Love Actually and this is my first time recognizing that one of the girls fawning over Colin is January Jones, and its' strange seeing her so young (and Chip, she's there right next to Elisha Cuthbert!  Gotta like that!)

I'll throw in a screencap tomorrow.

Here we go.  Watching, I realized how terrible her delivery is for all her lines.  I think Betty Draper might be the only role she's good at, because she's meant to be disaffected and flat and frightening to the children (she made the little kid actors cry at least once during filming)
