Dark Blue
Special Edition

Trailer

It's been a while since I last saw Dark Blue. It's good, but it's not as good as I remember it to be. The performances by Kurt Russell and Scott Speedman were solid. But the motivation of both characters they play aren't entirely heroic. Kurt basically plays the 'bad cop', working for an even dirtier police chief, doing the grunt work, while he gets fat off his riches. Scott is his new partner that is tainted by his working relationship with Kurt. It is never clear that Scott is the 'good cop' because his moral compass is already skewed. Both of their reasons to finally become the 'upstanding cops' they swore an oath to be, is done solely out of self preservation. It's kind of a 'no honor among thieves' as they all try to do the other one in, so that they don't take the fall in the end.

To be fair, there does seem to be some regret and guilt by Kurt and Scott about what they have done. But it's kind of hollow because, as I mentioned before, it's just them trying to save their own asses. So, it's kind of hard to root for anyone in this movie. None of them are entirely likable and what's ironic is that I find Ving Rhames character to be just as unlikable, if not more so. Why? He is without question the 'good cop' in this story, but the way he speaks and talks to his "congregation", he comes off like a slick car salesman....or Evangelist if you will. There are some good moments (all of it by way of Kurt) to be found and setting the movie during the days leading up to and culminating during the Rodney King / LA Riots was good angle. It gives you something to think about beyond what is happening on screen. It's worth a Rent, but the ending is definitely not satisfying, as there really isn't any resolution. Personally, I prefer Training Day.
