There are only a handful of movies that had trailers that left a very profound effect on me and
Robocop is one of them. I remember seeing the trailer for the first time in the theater and it had a HUGE impact on everyone there. It was so BIG that I can't even remember what movie I saw because all I was thinking about was
Robocop and when was it coming out. When it finally came out, I was blown away for a few reasons.
The biggest thing right off the bat was how violent this was. Those that know me know I'm not a prude, so this isn't a question of "how dare they show so much blood...." No, for me I was just shocked that the movie made it through the censors board with just an
R Rating (there was no
NC-17 at the time).
Paul Verhoeven really pushed the envelope with this and to great effect. The thing is, watching this tonight, it's even more astounding just how much he got away with because it's STILL pretty gruesome by today's standard. I also liked that the social commentary by the newcast and the PSA from the movie found their way into
Starship Troopers in similar fashion.
The other thing I took away from the movie was just how original and groundbreaking the film was. Awesome lead character with kick ass villains played by
Ronny Cox and
Kurtwood Smith. But the movie begins and ends with
Peter Weller as
Robocop. Great story too. I had such high hopes for the series as it was a no-brainer that there would be more. Obviously this is the only installment worth owning. Yes, this is a
Buy. One of the best in the genre of all time. Go get it now!!!
