Mad Men (Season 5 - 2012)
« on: May 16, 2013, 11:14:47 pm »

It should come as no secret that I'm a huge fan of the series and Season 5 continues the tradition of solid writing with some very unique story lines throughout the 13 episodes. As much as love the series, I have been waiting for that one scene that just floors me. Every great series has a pivotal scene that defines what the show is about and after 5 seasons, they finally delivered it for me. The scene in question is Peggy's resignation from the Ad Agency. Talk about about a powerful scene that escalates into something else by the end. When she is saying her goodbyes to Don, based on his personae on the show, we all expect him to rise up and start ranting in the way he always does. But when Peggy just offers her hand to say 'thanks' to him for all he had done for her career, all he can do is just kiss her hand, it summed up everything he feels about their working relationship as well as their personal relationship. With the kiss, he is saying  goodbye while at the same time telling her not to go, all without having to say a single word. But he knows it's a lost cause. Like I said, an incredible scene that I will always think about whenever I watch the show from here on out.

Her exodus wasn't the only thing that I thought was interesting. The other story line that had a huge impact was of course Lane embezzling from the company. As soon as he was caught red-handed, I knew that the only way out for him would be to take his own life. I really liked the character and wanted to see him find a way out of the hole he had dug. Sad how it ended. In Season 4, I had some issues with January Jones reduced role on the show. Well, those are small potato's by comparison now, because in Season 5, her role was drastically reduced even more. Big time. All though she had an interesting arc about becoming overweight, they really didn't do much with it and I would say she had probably 30 minutes of screen time out of 13 episodes in total. Not good.  Glen and Sally. Their arc continues, but also to a lesser degree. He still creeps me out.

Having Pete getting his ass kicked 3 times this season was highly entertaining. They guy is a douche and has been begging to get punched in the face. One thing that surprised me was seeing Paul return for just one episode as a Hare Krishna. I knew something was off in Season 4, that someone was missing. I didn't realize that Michael Gladis wasn't on the show anymore till he popped up here. I'm still waiting for Bryan Batt to return as Sal, which I did noticed last season. I highly recommend this as a Rent for sure.

This was the first season where I was actively watching for both Alison Brie and Larisa Oleynik, but I honestly wasn't expecting to see Mr Belding pop up.  That's one piece of casting that actually took me back (even more so than the real Mrs Pete, Alexis Bledel).

BTW, is there any sight that breaks your mind like seeing Don Draper in a Howard Johnsons?
