I've been very resistant about wanting to see
Man of Steel since the first leaked image of
Henry Cavill as
Superman in his costume came out. I just did not like the new design and furthermore, I didn't have a clue who this
Henry guy was. So, skipping it at the theater wasn't a big deal, especially after word started coming out that most people didn't really care for the movie. But I knew that I would eventually get around to seeing this on DVD, so I kept the spoilers at bay and really didn't pay any attention to plot and casting.
Funny thing happened, as soon as I got on the wait list at the library for the DVD, suddenly I HAD to see it. Really not sure why that is since nothing had changed about overall opinion toward the movie. Well, having just watched this, I can definitely say that it's better than
Superman Returns, but it still pales in comparison to
Superman: The Movie. There are some major issues I have with
Man of Steel. There are good things and bad things. The bad is that there is absolutely no character development. Sure, what Superhero flick has that? Doesn't matter. With
Zack Snyder and
Christopher Nolan Directing and Producing, I was hopeful that they would try to do something different with the genre and that's where I think a lot of the failure comes from. The movie looks great, but it also comes across as the most expensive art-house film of all time and the pacing isn't the best either.
I like the FX and the way the editing was done with regards to the flashbacks scenes, which itself does seem like they went out of their way to tell the same origin story, but in a different way, so I give them props for that. The flashback scenes themselves were by far the most memorable and emotional, something that the present day story didn't really have. As I said, no character development beyond
Clark as a kid. I love
Amy Adams, but I'm not sure if she was the right choice to play
Lois Lane. Not sure if her playing opposite
Henry had anything to do with it, but there really was no chemistry between them at all. You could also point the finger at the fact that with no character development, that's going to be an uphill battle, so blaming the actors isn't fair.
The other thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way was the fact that they went against story canon and basically blew
Superman's identity with pretty much everyone that was around
Clark in some manner. I'm just so use to the
Superman myth being told a specific way, so when they start deviating as much as they do in this movie, it's a bit jarring. With everyone knowing who he is, how does the final scene with him arriving at the
Daily Planet work, even with his glasses? Part of the appeal and fun was seeing
Clark Kent juggling two lives and keeping Lois at bay with his secret. I don't think the movie is as bad as most have made it out to be, but I seriously hope that the sequel follows more along the lines of a traditional Superhero movie. This is worth a
Rent for sure and if eye popping FX's is your thing, you will love the amount of destruction that takes place here. Talk about a one-man wrecking crew!
