Man of Steel
Two-Disc Special Edition

Trailer

I've been very resistant about wanting to see Man of Steel since the first leaked image of Henry Cavill as Superman in his costume came out. I just did not like the new design and furthermore, I didn't have a clue who this Henry guy was. So, skipping it at the theater wasn't a big deal, especially after word started coming out that most people didn't really care for the movie. But I knew that I would eventually get around to seeing this on DVD, so I kept the spoilers at bay and really didn't pay any attention to plot and casting.

Funny thing happened, as soon as I got on the wait list at the library for the DVD, suddenly I HAD to see it. Really not sure why that is since nothing had changed about overall opinion toward the movie. Well, having just watched this, I can definitely say that it's better than Superman Returns, but it still pales in comparison to Superman: The Movie. There are some major issues I have with Man of Steel. There are good things and bad things. The bad is that there is absolutely no character development. Sure, what Superhero flick has that? Doesn't matter. With Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan Directing and Producing, I was hopeful that they would try to do something different with the genre and that's where I think a lot of the failure comes from. The movie looks great, but it also comes across as the most expensive art-house film of all time and the pacing isn't the best either.

I like the FX and the way the editing was done with regards to the flashbacks scenes, which itself does seem like they went out of their way to tell the same origin story, but in a different way, so I give them props for that. The flashback scenes themselves were by far the most memorable and emotional, something that the present day story didn't really have. As I said, no character development beyond Clark as a kid. I love Amy Adams, but I'm not sure if she was the right choice to play Lois Lane. Not sure if her playing opposite Henry had anything to do with it, but there really was no chemistry between them at all. You could also point the finger at the fact that with no character development, that's going to be an uphill battle, so blaming the actors isn't fair.

The other thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way was the fact that they went against story canon and basically blew Superman's identity with pretty much everyone that was around Clark in some manner. I'm just so use to the Superman myth being told a specific way, so when they start deviating as much as they do in this movie, it's a bit jarring. With everyone knowing who he is, how does the final scene with him arriving at the Daily Planet work, even with his glasses? Part of the appeal and fun was seeing Clark Kent juggling two lives and keeping Lois at bay with his secret. I don't think the movie is as bad as most have made it out to be, but I seriously hope that the sequel follows more along the lines of a traditional Superhero movie. This is worth a Rent for sure and if eye popping FX's is your thing, you will love the amount of destruction that takes place here. Talk about a one-man wrecking crew!

We'll be so lucky if the new Star Wars looks like the Krypton scenes.  Having said that, the whole time I kept thinking "Superman doesn't exist yet, so these scenes DON'T HAVE TO BE IN THE MOVIE!"  For god's sakes!

And can I say how much I hate how dour this movie was?  Not just in terms of the bleak outlook, they sapped that world of colour and of flavour, it was all gray and just... ugh.  That annoys me normally in movies and it's so out of place in a movie about Superman.

Did you notice that Jimmy Olsen is a girl in this movie?  Me either.  What an interesting way to change up a character, and no one noticed.

And here's the thing I hate I hate I HATE that movies do these days, and this one is so gut-wrenchingly guilty of doing: the whole thing wraps up, basically promising that the NEXT movie will be the "Superman" we know, aka, the Superman we thought we were paying for when we came in to see THIS god-d*mn movie.  And of course, the NEXT Superman isn't the next Superman, it's a dry run for the Justice League.  F*** that.

Ya know, I thought the same thing. As soon as the final scene fades to black, the first thing I said (literally said out loud) was this 2 hour movie was basically an infomercial for the "real" Superman movie that's coming.

Worse, that's NOT coming!  You know, you used to get sequels when the first movie was really good.  Not anymore!  Star Trek kinda did that as well!  You KNOW Star Wars will, b/c they've got franchise pieces coming out the butt (I wanted to make a Star Wars reference but I couldn't think of one), just... ugh.

Meanwhile, Marvel is smart, they give us the movie we paid to see, and the "sequel" is just the next Marvel superhero movie.  it's kind of the Pixar model they're working with.

What if Man of Steel was IN COLOR? (VideoLab)

If only.

I dig the color corrections. It does help bring you into the world. The desaturated look, as we have already discussed before is off-putting and having the Original and the Restored side by side just makes it even more clearer just how wrong they got it with the "visual" look of the film.

Continuing with my own little DVD marathon of movies that I had high hopes for only to be disappointed with brings me back to Man of Steel. Following on the heels of Sucker Punch and Tron: Legacy, I had to give MoS another shot to see if something, anything would change for me. I had a different mindset this time around, specifically trying to keep Batman/Ben Affleck lurking in the background somewhere as the movie played on. Of the three movies I gave a second chance, I think MoS was somewhat better. Yes, it still has problems as stated in my original review, but at least this one wasn't boring which was huge for me. Some victory. I'm still working on ideas for my own Sucker Punch and Tron Legacy stories, but I don't have any idea of how I would change MoS. It never occurred to me to even think of doing a re-write while watching this tonight. As for my second time around for MoS, I actually give this a half star bump upward. 3 1/2 Stars.

Man Of Steel was one of those flicks I was rewriting before it ever came out.

NO desire to revisit this flick.

Incomplete like most of them because there's no need to finish them, but I daresay mine was fun.  There was a bit of Doctor Who inspiration in there, from the chameleon cloth in the suit... the Superman suit can change into Clark's regular clothes, and it also has this subtle little pattern thread that keeps people from recognizing his face when he's Superman, it just won't compute.  Clark can literally stand next to a full-size photo of Superman and no one would be able to notice that it's the same person.  I just thought that would be an interesting change from the "you can't recognize him with his glasses on."

Chloe is an active participant, she's the only one that Clark can talk to about being Superman, which is something he's never had in the movies before.  And there's a little love triangle going on because Clark loves Lois but Chloe has feelings for him since they grew up together and she helped him discover his powers.

Daily Planet's different, the owner was inspired by Harlan Ellison, "if I thought any of you could do my job right I'd retire tomorrow" type of crank.  There's no old typewriters or anything there, it's a newspaper not obsessed with the past, just the next issue.  Jimmy Olsen's the designer, he's actually inspired by a guy named Jacek Utko and he does the layouts, graphics and so on, so he's sort of the hub of activity in the bullpen.

The big plot at the end wound up being what happened in Avengers II, I wanted to have the bad guys try to use the Fortress Of Solitude as a meteor, requiring Clark to fly into space (which he hadn't been able to do yet) and save the day.  That whole sequence was going to start in the subway and Clark would fight his way up the skyline, sort of the reverse of the flying scene in Jupiter Ascending, where they float down to the ground.  The climax was going to destroy both the Fortress and the Daily Planet, meaning things in the next movie will be different than anything we've seen in Superman before.

I like it. You should put pen to paper and actually write out a script, dialogue and all. So, I'm really curious as to why you chose to rewrite Man of Steel before it even came out. The fact that you did, I find very fascinating.

It was because... first, I wasn't nuts about Snyder doing it, and I remember at the time hearing other people propose Superman and go into the same tropes and revisiting what came before, setting Superman in the 40s or trying to bring the 40s to the present, so I was just experimenting with how to take things in a different direction, see what I could do without having to obey everything that came before.

I rather like writing the movie before I see it, putting down what I'd like to see rather than be influenced by someone else's decisions.  It's helped me notice patterns I fall into and references I draw upon too much, which is very beneficial.  My big pre-write at the moment is probably Power Rangers, just in terms of scale, since I have four different ways that it could unfold.

I'm keeping those ideas to myself until I come up with something original that I can use the ideas for.  I usually only do this as an exercise, writing for the trashcan.  There's really no value in having a full proper script for a movie that I can't do anything with, so I don't spend too much time on them, just play with ideas if they strike me.
