Megamind (2010)
« on: May 17, 2013, 05:29:04 pm »

I was not expecting much from Megamind. Not that I thought it would be bad, it's just that I really didn't hear much in the way of fan reaction about the movies in the time it came and went. Usually there would be good and bad press, but I heard absolutely nothing one way or the other. Well, I can honestly say that this movie was incredibly funny. Really funny. And I think a lot of it has to do with Will Ferrel's voice acting. Yes, the voice is unmistakably his and I think that's part of the charm. He really only has one way of speaking in characters and it's hard to separate the man from voice. There were times while watching the movie, i.e. listening to his voice that I would picture him doing his "voices" on SNL or movies, most notably that of Mustafa from Austin Powers.

Now, how about the CGI animation? Damn, that is some sick looking stuff and I'm not talking about the surface of what we are seeing, but the more intricate parts regarding facial animation. There are a lot of details in the smallest things...a quiver of the lip, a raised eyebrow...a sigh, that really takes this to another level in the artistry of what the animators were able to put up on the Big Screen. This is a fun romp that more or less skewers the Superhero Genre. It really is poking fun at the dark and gloomy turn most seemed to have turned to lately and made this very lighthearted by comparison. The other cool deviation from the norm when it comes to computer animated movies is how they with with some very popular songs that you would never find in a Pixar or Disney flix. George Thorogood, Michael Jackson, AC/DC, Guns N Roses and Ozzy Osbourne / Randy Rhoads really added to the overall enjoyment of the movie for me. I highly recommend this as a Rent.

I have to admit, I wasn't drawn that drawn to Megamind when I saw it.  May have to give this a revisit.

That's pretty wild catch.

I dunno about a sequel for Megamind. Brad Bird has mentioned his desire for an Incredibles 2.

I have no problem with that. I'm actually surprised that it hasn't already happened. I know that average turn around time for a Pixar flick is about 4 years from concept to completed film. But to not hear anything in so long.............

What would the sequel to Incredibles even be about?  I remember ages ago suggesting a prequel comic series in the vein of Astro City's "The Dark Age" showing the cavalcade of heroes that are no longer with us.  But a sequel.. what's the point?  Especially now that we're awash with superhero movies.  How would you make it stand out?

With all the Pixar sequels that have been coming lately, from Monsters University this summer to Finding Dory in 2015, many fans have been wondering, where's the sequel to the film that could so easily have one: The Incredibles. Well, director Brad Bird has always said he doesn't just want to do a sequel because it's easy to make another superhero movie, and he wants to have a story about the family to tell with as much heart and substance as the first one. But that doesn't mean he doesn't want to do it. When THR sat down with Bird recently, they asked about The Incredibles 2 and he remarked, "I have been thinking about it."

Bird, who is working on Tomorrowland at Disney right now, said:

People think that I have not been [thinking about 'The Incredibles 2'], but I have. Because I love those characters and love that world. I am stroking my chin and scratching my head. I have many, many elements that I think would work really well in another film, and if I can get Ďem to click all together, I would probably wanna do that.

I like the idea of moving a little more quickly in films. Iím looking for ways to accelerate the pace a little bit and figure out a way to keep creative control over these movies to a level where Iím comfortable with the end result but also speed them up a bit and make more of them. I have many different films I wanna make. Itís like a big airplane hangar and I have different projects on the floor; half-assembled in my brain. Iím interested in all of them. You kind of have to move on the ones people are willing to pay for and the ones youíre most excited about.

I guess with all the big superhero movies making a comeback and being these huge event pictures (seriously, who would have even IMAGINED the Avengers movie when the first Incredibles came out), they could certainly comment on that.

I did a drawing a few months ago that, if anything, is proof why I shouldn't be allowed anywhere near this property: it was a teeange violet with all the Dragon Tattoo piercings and mohawk.

Yeah, four superheroes spend two hours hunched over laptops.  Although I suppose that if they took on the hero genre, a detective/espionage themed hero movie might work for them.
