Quantum of Solace

Trailer

I was 100% positive that I had seen Quantum of Solace prior to tonight. But watching it tonight, there wasn't one damn thing that I remembered. So, I guess I didn't see this one after all. I think maybe because I had watched the Trailer a few times it tricked my mind into thinking that I did. Anyway.....

This movie is definitely a step down from  C a s i n o  Royale for sure, but I don't think this is as bad as most people seem to have made it out to be. Daniel Craig still makes an awesome James Bond and I really liked the fact that this movie is continuing the narrative from the last film. When has that ever happened in a Bond film? Never. It's the plot of this one that seems to be lost. It's kind of all over the place and there really wasn't any tension at all. I never saw Bond in a situation that seemed like a life and death end game for him.

There was one really jarring scene for me in this one though. When Mathis is basically gunned down and laying in the street bleeding out, he ask Bond to stay with him, to which he does. There is a very soft and compasionate moment where Bond is just holding and comforting him as he slips away. It's the very next scene that hits you like a ton of bricks when you see him dumping his body into the nearest dumpster. I get why they did that, beyond the fact that Bond says that Mathis wouldn't have cared one way or another. It's the subtext that I really like in scripts and for me it's simply stating a fact that Bond does have a heart, but at the end of the day, he can't allow himself the luxury of sentimentality and must get right back into doing his job, even if it means being disrespectful of the fallen in a way.

I also wanted to point out something that I saw this movie that was really hard not to notice and that was the changing Font for each location. I like the idea of using appropriate fonts to match the City that Bond is currently in. It gives it flavor. But having said that, He is jet setting all over the globe which means we are getting a lot of Font Changes in the Title Cards which after awhile ends up drawing too much attention to itself. There was one scene in particular that I really liked and that was Agent Fields laying on the bed, covered in oil. For those that never got into the classic Connery Bond of yesteryear, this is a homage to Goldfinger where the chick is covered in....Gold.

The movie isn't as bad as most people have said and I think it's still worth a Rent.

While I've never read one single Bond book, I've heard discussion of late how Craig is the closest representation. And if you think about it, Bond is a psychopath. He is a dark man, with no problem killing people. It's a job he loves.

So ya, the disconnect from sentimentality exists in a big way, despite what the movie goers tend to gloss over.

Good catch.
