Minority Report (2002)

Minority Report
Two-Disc Special Edition

Trailer

Minority Report is a fantastic Murder Mystery wrapped up in a Sci-fi blanket. I absolutely believe that Minority Report is the most underrated film in Spielberg's filmography and I think a lot of it has to do with how dark the movie is story-wise compared to his more 'family friendly' films. The movie as a whole is brilliantly shot and edited. The film looks gorgeous, I love the color palette for this one with its monochromatic tint. And this is one of the smartest scripts I've seen in a long time. This will definitely require you to pay attention and shouldn't be compared to that of a 'popcorn flick', which it really isn't. Even though it's billed as a science fiction film, Speilberg doesn't rely on it as a crutch. He lets the story itself take you to another world. Sure there are some pretty cool looking sci-fi moments, but I don't think it's what makes this movie a winner at all. If anything, I think the sci-fi element is actually played down to some degree. It will never be confused with the likes of Blade Runner. even though both come from the mind of Philip K. Dick.

I have seen this countless times since the movie came out. I would say on average, I watch this one at least once a year, sometimes two times in a calendar year. Great performance from Tom Cruise and Max von Sydow for sure, but the real star in my eyes, the one that makes this a great ride is Samantha Morton. If you haven't watched this lately, check out every single scene she is in and you will see an actress that is in the moment, owning it. She absolutely should be a bigger star. If she would just do some high profile films, she would be at the top in my book.

Also, one last thing, don't listen to anyone that says the ending sucks. Not true. It's an epilogue for a reason...to show you where the characters are at after the initial ending of the movie. I like seeing that Sean and his Ex-Wife Lara (Kathryn Morris) got back together and are starting another family and I liked that the PreCogs get to live their lives in peace as it should be.

I highly recommend this as a Buy. I own the Two-Disc Special Edition and it's worth every cent. Props to the Cameron Crowe cameo. Can you find it without cheating? It's hard not to find it when it presents itself.

At times it can be dark, but I believe it is underrated because of the sci-fi core aspect. I can only imagine my wife watching this and getting a glazed look in her eyes not understanding the concept.

A lot of sci-fi gets ignored because of this. People just can't or won't immerse themselves in it.

Your right, Spielberg really pulls back and let's the actors take control of script. Beautifully shot and just a blast of entertainment.

I watched this again the other day and was taken back by the photography. While it wasn't horrible, it did distract me. Some of the soft focus and bright lighting just distracted. I just chalk it up to Spielberg experimenting with a specific look. He used the technique again later in War of the Worlds, but to a much lesser degree.

I like it when older threads are revived. I just wish there were more lens flares attached to said thread.
