I have an emotional attachment to Big Miracle because I was absolutely riveted by the plight of the 3 whales trapped up in the Alaskan ice. I remember this like it was yesterday for a couple of reasons. First, the idea of 3 whales struggling to survive was a story that had never been told before on such a massive, worldwide stage. And second, at this time in my life, I wasn't big on watching the news as my interest was usually elsewhere. But even this grabbed my attention.

Big Miracle is a great family picture that is basically a blow-by-blow (pun intended) retelling of the story. When I first heard that they were going to make a movie about this, even I had my doubts that this would be able to sustain itself beyond 90 minutes. But the story is so engaging and had plenty of back story to what the public at large wasn't told, that it exceeded the run time and more. I knew how it ended, but I was very much into the movie and how it would all end. There is something very cool and special watching a group of people from different cultures that are "sworn enemies" coming together for a common good to showcase what the human spirit can achieve. The ending was fantastic. How best to describe the movie for the uninitiated? It's Free Willy Meets Titanic.

Definitely worth a Rent and it has a great cast: Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski, Ted Danson, Dermot Mulroney and my girl Kristen Bell. Be sure to stick around through the credits as they show you the real people behind those iconic news reels.
