Ghost World

Trailer

A quirky little movie called Ghost World can best be described as a 'coming of age' story. Well, kinda. More on that in a bit. Simply put, it's about two best friends that graduate from High School and get ready to tackle the world on their own terms. Becca played by Scarlett Johansson wants to get a typical job and move into her own place with her best friend Enid played by Thora Birch who has a different idea of how to make her mark...by doing nothing. She is unmotivated and wants to stay in the same place in life. It's not until a chance encounter with Seymore (Steve Buscemi) does she begins to "grow".

Well, that's a bit misleading in itself right there. She helps him to get a girlfriend, becomes jealous of said girlfriend, gets him to dump girlfriend and then wants nothing to do with him after the fact. She really doesn't grow at all and the ending is a big letdown because her answer to all her problems is simply to get on the Bus and head out of town, running away from her problems. There is no resolution. In spite of this ending, the movie itself is quite enjoyable with its odd mix of character types. I just wish the writer wasn't so lazy to have it end like that. Yes, this is based on a Comic Book, so I guess they wanted to hold true to the source material. But come on, give us a legitimate ending that's not gonna leave us in the dark and show Enid's character arc to completion. The open ended last scene can mean anything really. Is she running away? Or is this her way of finally growing up and making the move into adulthood? The ending has been a hot topic of debate over the years of what it is or isn't. I guess we will never truly know........

In spite of the ending, this is still a great movie. Definitely Rent this. Personally, I own this on DVD and it's not one I will be getting rid of anytime soon. Bought this as a 'Blind Buy' when the movie first came out on DVD and I've never regretted it.
