Lethal Weapon 2 may not be as "cutting edge" or groundbreaking as
Lethal Weapon as far as story goes, but the movie is just as good if not better in my opinion. Out of the entire series,
LW2 is by far my favorite of the bunch. Where the first film was a straight up Action flick with a lead character bordering on suicidal tendencies, in
LW2, Director
Richard Donner and the rest of the cast really pushed the comedic elements to the forefront making this one of the greatest and still to this day one of the funniest 'Action Comedies' of all time.
The comedy is not based on cheap gags or jokes from a book. It's all situational comedy as well as the budding relationship between
Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and
Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) that drives the laughs even further. It's still incredibly funny over 20 years later. But the biggest addition to
LW2 was adding a third wheel to the mix. With
Joe Pesci on board as
Leo Getz, this turned out to be gangbusters for film-goers. The franchise morphed into
The Three Stooges with Explosions, Gun Fights and Car Chases. How can you not like that? If you've ever read articles about the series or seen camera interviews with the cast of
Lethal Weapon, it should come as no surprise that
Donner, Gibson and
Glover have all said it's their favorite installment in the series. That's good enough for me.
As with the first film, I highly recommend this as a
Buy. For a movie technically in the 80's mold, it sounds and looks fantastic. It has aged like fine wine. Definitely a film that will always be part of my personal DVD Library.
