Risen (2016)
« on: September 15, 2016, 07:02:47 am »

Ya know what, when I saw the trailer for Risen when it first dropped, I never really paid all that much attention to it or what the story was. Totally forgot about this movies existence until it popped up in my Library feed and when I finally got a hold of the DVD, I thought this was just going to be another Sword and Sandals type of flick, one that was in the realm of Gladiator. I really was surprised to see that this was actually covering the 40 days days of Jesus Christ's Resurrection. As for the movie itself, this can clearly be dissected into two halves. The first half has to do with a Roman Soldier (Joseph Fiennes), who had a hand in the crucifixion, trying to uncover the mysterious "disappearance" of the body from the tomb. It actually plays like a CSI episode as he uses his detective skills to uncover what exactly happened. This first half will no doubt try your patience. If you're not a fan of forensic shows, this isn't for you. But the second half more than makes up for this. It's actually very rewarding to see Joseph Fiennes' character believing in Christ and thus changing his worldview and outlook on life. The second half follows his disciples and how they were sent on their own personal missions to spread his gospel. If not for a very sluggish first half, I would rate the movie higher. It's still worth a Rent and would make a great double feature alongside The Passion of the Christ.
