Oblivion

Trailer

I went into Oblivion with absolutely no preconceived idea about what the gist of the story would be. As I remember it, I kinda purposely didn't pay attention to the trailer for fear that too much of the plot would given out and that was 6 months ago. So, I finally got my copy from the Library today and was anxiously looking forward to it. Oblivion is not what I had in mind. Sure, I brought it on myself by avoiding spoilers, but in my head when you pair up Tom Cruise and Sci-Fi, you kinda fill in the blanks of what the movie would....or should be. Well, this isn't your typical 'Outer Space' type of film.

There is a lot at work under the surface and having patience to see it to the end will reward you. I've b*tched and moaned about other flicks not giving me an idea of what's going on and doing their best to hold off to the very end before the big picture is laid out. I will say that once I realized that Oblivion was following the same path, I was kind p*ssed. We are kept in the dark for such a long time....till pretty much till the 3rd Act.

Oblivion has something working for it that the other films that keep everything close to the vest till the very end do not have and that is a sense of mystery bubbling to the surface. I should say intriguing mystery to be more precise. If I wasn't interested in where the story was going, I wouldn't even care what the big reveal is at the end. The movie isn't perfect. The most surprising thing about the movie....or more specifically how I responded to the film was that the longer I stayed with it, the better it got. I can easily recommend this as a Rent for sure and I can easily see myself liking this even more with future viewings. But for now, I will say that 4 Stars out of 5 is where I have this at. Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo, Olga Kurylenko, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Andrea Riseborough round out the cast.

My favourite note when I watched this was "...when did humanity decide that their symbol was going to be a triangle?"

BTW, I don't know if you've seen Astro Boy but right in the first few scenes we see little robots that look JUST like those big round ones that Tom Cruise keeps fixing and running away from.

I wasn't sure where I had seen them before, but now that you brought it up, I can see the similarities between the two.
