Paper Moon (1973)
« on: December 27, 2013, 10:05:46 am »

I have not seen Paper Moon in it's entirety in well over 30 years. Perhaps longer than that. I actually didn't see the movie until maybe a just after I saw The Bad News Bears. I will say this is definitely only the 2nd time I've seen Paper Moon from start to finish and it's every bit as good as the first time around. Since I was still in Elementary School back then and was kind of forced to watch it because my Mom had control of the TV, I really can appreciate Paper Moon more now. Ryan O'Neal is great in the role of Moze, but lets be honest here, the movie begins and ends with Tatum O'Neal. There is no getting around the fact that she steals the movie from him and everyone else, including the great Madeline Kahn who herself is fantastic as well.

Watching Paper Moon, with all the sordid history that makes up the Tatum and Ryan dynamic does kind of alter one's perception of the movie. You can't help but watch a scene and not read into it a bit more based on their history. As far as story goes, it's pretty simple in which Addie (Tatum O'Neal) helps Moze (Ryan O'Neal) con their way across the country during the Great Depression. The movie looks fantastic with great direction from the great Peter Bogdanovich. I highly recommend this as a Rent for a number of reasons, but at the top of the list is Tatum in her award winning role.

One cool thing about watching this and given how old the movie is now and how little I knew about 'Actors', it was a trip to see Randy Quaid, Burton Gilliam and John Hillerman in this. I never knew they were in this.
