Predator 2: Special Edition

I gotta preface this by saying that I like pretty much every actor in Predator 2, and we all know how much I dig the character itself. But this has a lot going wrong in this movie. It pales in comparison to the original Predator movie which just kicks ass from start to finish. But in this far inferior sequel, it just feels wrong in every way. The first 3/4th's of the movie is nothing more than "Lethal Weapon" with a Predator thrown into the mix. It's not until the 3rd Act kicks in do I even begin to really get into the movie because it gives us some really cool reveals about Predator's in general from how long they have been around to some of their more specific trophies (T-Rex, Alien, etc...)

One thing that bugs me about this one is the ending and the manner that Harrigan (Danny Glover) kills the Predator is pretty outlandish and far fetched. I just can't buy that a Predator, who has been hunting him the entire movie, does battle against his own "Frisbee-blade" would suddenly forget that Harrigan has it in his hand and would just nonchalantly walk up to him and get gutted in the way that he does.

Even with all these things that are just wrong, I can still give this one 3 Stars. Mostly it's because of the 3rd Act and not the rest of the movie. I own this, but I can only recommend it as a Rent.

Like I said, I really like the cast that includes Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Bill Paxton, Ruben Blades, Marķa Conchita Alonso, Adam Baldwin and some tiny little guy name Kevin Peter Hall too. I liked that Steve Kahan also makes a little cameo in this one, rounding out 3 players from the Lethal Weapon series.

You give it a lot more credit than I have. I think Predator 2 is a classic example of the studio putting out a sequel regardless of anything that makes sense except cashing in.... On the coattails of the highly popular original.

The story is wrong. I mean all through a major city? The casting was a real head scratcher. An old detective that hobbles along really puts the cobash on a believable action movie. It was photographed well and the director did what he could with what he was given, but this was so far removed from the original, I felt the powers to be totally blew it. I never looked for a rehash, but wasn't expecting a total diversion like this. I've watched it once since the first time, hoping I was wrong. I was not.

One of those movies (like Alien 4) I completely ignore like it never happened.

What you point out in great detail is exactly how I feel about the first 3/4th of the movie. I love the actors, but the casting as you said is just....pushing it. I think my original review of pointing out the cast makes it sound like the cast for the movie was perfect.  It's not. Was simply trying to highlight that I like them as actors in general. The movie is wrong having it take place in downtown LA. I think the reason why the last act works for me is that all of the sudden it became claustrophobic like the original. Having it play out in wide open spaces of the city never felt right for me. The other thing I did like about it is the final reveal when suddenly Harrigan is faced not with just one Predator, but a whole horde of them. The first time I ever saw the movie, I never thought about there being more than one at any given time.

This is definitely one of those movies that got rushed out just for the sake of putting it out there and seeing how much money they could squeeze out of the franchise.
