JCVD is way better than I thought it was going to be. Sure, I went into this based on the much hyped monologue scene, but ended up watching a pretty cool flick in the process. In this one, Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a version of himself in a fictional story where is his taken hostage along with a group of other hostages at the hands of would-be robbers holding up a Post Office. JCVD definitely shows a different side to the man in a very subdued performance. This movie might not be for everyone. You definitely have to know some of his earlier movies to get some of the inside jokes that aren't necessarily being played for laughs but more for acknowledgement.

The capper to the movie is of course the one-take monologue in which he breaks the 4th wall and begins talking to the audience. It's a bold move not only for the movie, but for the man himself to come clean and bare his soul about a lot of things. I'd be lying if I didn't get choked up when he began to break down. It's a very powerful scene. As for the rest of the movie, it's a pretty good heist film that will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see how it all unfolds.

For me I'd probably Buy it, but I will recommend this as a Rent, especially if you are a fan of his.
