Premium Rush

Trailer

A while back on one of the DVD's I checked out, they had the Trailer for Premium Rush and it was good enough to sell me on adding it to my Hold List. That was about 3 months ago. That's how long it took to get a copy of the movie. Sheesh! The Trailer is great, the movie on the other hand...not so much. It's called Premium Rush, but a more fitting title would be Mediocre Static. The movie just never takes flight in the way the trailer depicts it. It's not a bad movie, it just doesn't ever get out of first gear.

The credibility of the movie is undermined by a weak villain. As good as Michael Shannon is in other things, he was totally miscast here. Well, maybe if he brought the same type of character he portrays on Boardwalk Empire, this could have been something great. But in this one, the character he plays is no more of a threat then a Clown handing out balloons. He is dumb, stupid and just overall clueless. Never once did I feel that the other characters were ever in any kind of serious danger. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was okay in the lead role for what it was. Nothing to write home about. Dania Ramirez was okay as well. I feel bad for Jamie Chung having to use a stereotypical dialect with broken English. I get that her character is from a Foreign land and has only be in the United States for 3 years, but still. I have to imagine that she felt strange speaking like that because he comes off pretty bad to me.

Anyway, this is just on okay movie. Worth a Rent at best. One thing to keep in mind is that the story told through the fractured narrative. Best exmaple of this style of story-telling can be found in go, which itself has been called Pulp Fiction-Lite.

Holy crap.... did I not post a review here? Dammit, I thought I did.

Edit: I did... now why didn't it show up in the search? Does the search not see text that's been changed in size or other attributes encasing it?

We might have seen different movies

I didn't think it was static at all. I rather enjoyed the energy here. I liked Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character and his character played well against the clueless horse blinded detective. I was kind of expecting a Quicksilver which is the only other bike delivery service I can recall. I liked Quicksilver... back then, but would probably find it way to slow and drama like today.

Premium seemed like a good blend of rather simple characterization, one plot going from  A to B. But it was a even a little better than I expected because of what Joseph Gordon-Levitt brings to the screen.

I was just expecting a whole lot more than what ended up on the screen. Like I said, it's not a bad movie, it just didn't take me to the place I thought the movie was going to. While watching Rush, I did keep flashing back to Quicksilver, which I haven't seen since it came out. I may have to revisit that one again. I'm sure it will look dated and slow by comparison.

I thought I remembered you doing a review and did a search, but it never came up in the results. So, I thought maybe I had imagined you doing one for the movie because I couldn't find anything on it.
