I went into the movie with NO idea what to expect....I'd been lucky enough and smart enough to not see any trailers, or really any interviews....nothing. I knew the title and that Ridley Scott directed it. I didn't even know who was in it.
The movies biggest strength to me was it's biggest weakness. Alien. (meaning the original film) I knew sort of instinctively there wouldn't be a ton of Aliens and especially the classic ones we've seen in the previous 4 films...but I felt like this movie didn't turn up the horror aspects that the first Alien movie did. I wanted more suspense and I guess with that more horror....it was a GREAT looking movie, and very well acted movie, I thought the cast of characters was really well chosen. I was never bored or wishing it would end...but when there was about 30 minutes left I was kind of wondering...when am I going to be scared...when is this going to get more intense (and I am a BIG ****...so I am not some jaded horror movie fan who isn't moved by anything....more truthfully I'd be the opposite of that.)
I felt like the end....was kind of a tilt....the "Pilot" was AWESOME and him going after the party who woke him was cool (and I'd agree with the above assessment that Guy Pearce was sort of wasted on that part of the old man....it would have been better to just get an older actor and not have to look at that fake looking old man prosthetics that just as easily could have been a jack ass bit.
I thought the now fully grown alien that took him down was so so....that fight with the octopus looking alien and the pilot was ok...and not really a big finale moment.
I liked her grabbing the android and kind of moving on out of there.
the "suicide mission" just didn't work for me...the acting in that scene just wasn't what I feel would ever happen with those 3 characters basically knowing they are going to fly their ship into the Alien craft.
I really was torn on the movie...I want to watch it again for sure and really go deeper into the story and see how layered it actually is.....but I'd give the movie itself a 2.5 out of 5.
I don't dislike it....but besides looks, and solid acting....the story or more specifically the ending was a little light. I really felt also the intensity of the film needed to be turned up a few notches....some really cool scenes.
tough one for me to give such a low score..but I feel it's a fair grade for the film.....it sure is a nice looking movie.
are there going to be more?
I honestly don't know...but would hope that Ridley is already working on a follow up.
