Prometheus

Trailer

So, I spent pretty much a whole year and some change avoiding any and all spoilers regarding Prometheus. Before the movie ever screened, I would hear things from Ridley Scott saying that it was part of the Alien canon, but it wasn't. This cryptic double speak that he was engaged in had me worried somewhat, but I put it out of my mind. And then I had to contend with some of the reviews that came out afterwards where it was mixed. Some liked it while others not so much. This too also had me worried. Was it because expectations were so high that they couldn't conceivably be met? Was the script bad? Did Ridley's mysterious double speak actually prove to be true? I didn't know. That is till tonight.

So, I just got finished watching this and I don't know why certain people said this was "boring" and "flat". I think it's a testament to Ridley Scott that he could create a film that basically doesn't have any Aliens in it and yet still fit in seamlessly with the franchise. Ridley's fingerprints were all over this and I thought he did an amazing job. The cast, especially that of Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron. If you're a fan of the series, you will definitely see the correlation between Noomi's  Elizabeth Shaw character being the precursor to Ellen Ripley.

I can see why some people may be somewhat ticked off that they didn't get the answers they wanted from Prometheus. But I have to laugh at these same people because of their stupidity. This is being set up as a potential Trilogy most likely and they aren't going to give it away when they want you to come back for the sequels. I'm okay with the story and how it was laid out here. I'm even okay with the fact that we don't see the classic Alien creature till the very end either. If you are an Alien fanatic, then you absolutely need to Buy this to add to your collection. I know I will.  I give the movie 5 Stars. But I know that after a couple more spins and I absorb some of the smaller details in the film that this can easily get the rare and privilege 10 Star rating.

When I get to a computer. Doing the iPad thing and typing is slow.

Dude, I had site upon site on theories, explanations, tear down of the movie, but since it was full of spoilers, I gave up. I threw away the sites. Gonna watch all the extras and see what gives there. Maybe there's a link to Jurassic Park 4  :-\

I forgot to mention that while watching the movie, I kept asking myself "where the f*ck is Guy Pearce". It wasn't until it was revealed that Weyland was on the ship did it dawn on me that they were one and the same.

Yea, Guy as Weyland I though was a wasted effort. Why not just get a really old man than the obvious makeup. That aside, I'm sure there's more to it, especially follow up in the next story.

There's a lot going on here. From the laid back captain, to the devious David the robot. Lot's of diametrically opposite folks on this trip. And what a trip. One person had an inkling what this might be? Weyland? The others along for what?

But I do love there's lots of questions. It's an open book to more. People want to be spoon fed. I hope questions get answered in the future. Lots' of what-ifs here, especially the big one. Where did we come from? F ucks with a lot of Christian beliefs.

I thought this was well thought out script. The acting was superb. The sets, the film all amazing.

I really don't understand that negativity some people have towards this. Their only argument is "I wanted answers". That's the best they can come up with? That's the basis for their whole argument? Suck it up and wait for the already announced sequel.

I went into the movie with NO idea what to expect....I'd been lucky enough and smart enough to not see any trailers, or really any interviews....nothing.  I knew the title and that Ridley Scott directed it.  I didn't even know who was in it.

The movies biggest strength to me was it's biggest weakness.  Alien. (meaning the original film)  I knew sort of instinctively there wouldn't be a ton of Aliens and especially the classic ones we've seen in the previous 4 films...but I felt like this movie didn't turn up the horror aspects that the first Alien movie did.  I wanted more suspense and I guess with that more horror....it was a GREAT looking movie, and very well acted movie, I thought the cast of characters was really well chosen.  I was never bored or wishing it would end...but when there was about 30 minutes left I was kind of wondering...when am I going to be scared...when is this going to get more intense (and I am a BIG ****...so I am not some jaded horror movie fan who isn't moved by anything....more truthfully I'd be the opposite of that.)

I felt like the end....was kind of a tilt....the "Pilot" was AWESOME and him going after the party who woke him was cool (and I'd agree with the above assessment that Guy Pearce was sort of wasted on that part of the old man....it would have been better to just get an older actor and not have to look at that fake looking old man prosthetics that just as easily could have been a jack ass bit.

I thought the now fully grown alien that took him down was so so....that fight with the octopus looking alien and the pilot was ok...and not really a big finale moment.

I liked her grabbing the android and kind of moving on out of there.

the "suicide mission" just didn't work for me...the acting in that scene just wasn't what I feel would ever happen with those 3 characters basically knowing they are going to fly their ship into the Alien craft.

I really was torn on the movie...I want to watch it again for sure and really go deeper into the story and see how layered it actually is.....but I'd give the movie itself a 2.5 out of 5.

I don't dislike it....but besides looks, and solid acting....the story or more specifically the ending was a little light.  I really felt also the intensity of the film needed to be turned up a few notches....some really cool scenes.

tough one for me to give such a low score..but I feel it's a fair grade for the film.....it sure is a  nice looking movie.

are there going to be more?
I honestly don't know...but would hope that Ridley is already working on a follow up.

I should add the Alien franchise is one of my all time favorites....even though not all the movies are created equally.

Prometheus is probably the second best looking based on the entire film.

The sequel has already been announced. I think 2 and half stars is a bit harsh. That's like saying Alien 3 or Resurrection is better. But I do believe that multiple viewings are definitely in order for this movie. I still need to process more of the film and pick up a little cues that may or may not be there. So, don't be expecting your DVD back anytime soon.

"I think 2 and half stars is a bit harsh. That's like saying Alien 3 or Resurrection is better"

I thought this movie was half way there...has nothing to do with either of those films.  I don't know what I'd give them....I wasn't comparing this movie to any of the films besides the first movie which to me is really the one that matters.

I felt this was a nice opportunity to do a new beginning right

and since it was before the original movies....it wasn't weighed down with the other films. (ie the films you mentioned...although I told you I am not a huge fan of Aliens)

again to me the first Alien film would be the only one I'd really compare this too...and only because they are both "beginnings of stories"

not directly comparing the films...although that might happen unintentionally.

like I said, I am pumped to watch this a bunch of times.

This is probably my favorite series of movies, for better or worse....meaning I don't feel they are all great films...but I like the genre/

I meant to bring this up in my original review and since I haven't really dived in to see what Ridley had in mind with this movie, the thing that immediately struck me toward the end when the Engineer was infected with the Alien entity and him already being 'Human' (or one with Human DNA) was to justify Alien Resurrection and the whole Ellen procreating with the Alien and creating the Human/Alien Hybrid. With the Alien species basically derived from Human DNA, it makes more sense that Ellen and the Alien would get it on. That's what went through my head. Not sure if that's the intention of the director and the writers of Prometheus. Anyone else pick up on this or am I in the minority here?

yeah totally possible.  there's some interesting stuff for sure....I am just as excited to watch this again as I was the first time...and I hope it grows on me more and more.  I felt like the end scene with the "Alien" was a bit of an apology letter at the end...and less of a "teaser" of what's to come.  sort of "this is what you'd thought you'd see but didn't....so here it is"  they could have started adding some of those little ****ers sooner so it felt more natural...and not some crappy "ps....this is coming...although we know you already knew that"  / at that point in the film...who really cares....it's not Avengers or some sh*tty Marvel film where I needed my fanboy Alien shot to feel fulfilled.

again the last 30 minutes to me....they really needed to crank up the intensity...and I just didn't feel like the movie ever got "hopeless" and like...wow these people are really in over their heads...and as the viewer I am feeling like I am in over my head...and I am scared WITH them.

I'd say this too.  The film looked great...but I can't give that extra mileage on this movie.....that kept it at 2.5 stars for me....my original thought was a 2 believe it or not...and again I don't dislike the film...it just didn't have a great story in my eyes.  it was a good story and good execution of it....so it hit dead center for me 2.5.

Hollywood sucks....the best ideas, great talent...and a bunch of f*ckwads in the middle who cut the balls off anything that moves.

I know Ridley is a tough son of a b*tch...but I guarantee studio hands got in on this film and made it more average.

I'd bet the farm on it.

I can't remember where I read it, but there was an article where the Studio was demanding Ridley create a "Director's Cut" of Prometheus by adding deleted and cut scenes for the DVD so that they could charge more and he he tells them "No, I already did the Director's Cut". Suits are spineless turds looking to just justify their overpaid salaries and will stop at nothing when it comes to artistic integrity.

I'm gonna bust out Alien tonight and watch the rest of the series the next 4 days.
