I can't believe it has taken me 11 years to finally see
Reign of Fire. Ever since it was released, I have been meaning to (and failing) to check this out. I love anything that has dragons on it and this looked like it would be something I could get behind 100%. Now even though I wanted to see this, I did fear that the movie would look and feel like a Direct-to-DVD release for some reason because I couldn't recall what studio was behind this and since the Big Studios weren't coming to mind, I figured that whoever did produce this would be an Indie studio and not have a lot of money to play with.
Well, the movie looks and sounds great. It was kind of a cross between
The Road Warrior, Jurassic Park (kinda) and
Aliens, especially with the military squad sent in to take on the Dragons. It had been so long since I saw the trailer that I couldn't remember what information was given to me and I certainly didn't remember that it would take place on planet Earth. I actually liked the premise of a sleeping Dragon that is finally awaken from slumber and scorches the planet and everyone in his way. The movie is basically a David Vs Goliath and all the Dragons you can imagine. Ya kinda know how it's gonna end, so there is no surprise, but it was still a entertaining movie.
Watching
Christian Bale, he looked and felt like the battered
Bruce Wayne hiding out in the mountains like he did in
Batman Begins, even though
Reign of Fire came before. Not a bad thing, just....kinda been there, done that. It was
Matthew McConaughey that was really fun to watch. Talk about an "American Bad Ass", who had the most epic scene I have witness in quite some time. You knew how it would end, but how f*cking cool was that seeing him fly through the air, Battle Axe in hand, going head to head with he Dragon? Yeeee-Haaaaaaaw!!
Definitely worth a
Rent. This was much better than I thought it would be. I would and will watch this again if I come across it while channel surfing. Having
Izabella Scorupco was nice eye candy amid all the doom and gloom. I haven't seen her in anything since, well, since
GoldenEye. Well, nothing else of hers comes to mind anyway.
