Reign of Fire (2002)
« on: August 10, 2013, 03:18:50 pm »

I can't believe it has taken me 11 years to finally see Reign of Fire. Ever since it was released, I have been meaning to (and failing) to check this out. I love anything that has dragons on it and this looked like it would be something I could get behind 100%. Now even though I wanted to see this, I did fear that the movie would look and feel like a Direct-to-DVD release for some reason because I couldn't recall what studio was behind this and since the Big Studios weren't coming to mind, I figured that whoever did produce this would be an Indie studio and not have a lot of money to play with.

Well, the movie looks and sounds great. It was kind of a cross between The Road Warrior, Jurassic Park (kinda) and Aliens, especially with the military squad sent in to take on the Dragons. It had been so long since I saw the trailer that I couldn't remember what information was given to me and I certainly didn't remember that it would take place on planet Earth. I actually liked the premise of a sleeping Dragon that is finally awaken from slumber and scorches the planet and everyone in his way. The movie is basically a David Vs Goliath and all the Dragons you can imagine. Ya kinda know how it's gonna end, so there is no surprise, but it was still a entertaining movie.

Watching Christian Bale, he looked and felt like the battered Bruce Wayne hiding out in the mountains like he did in Batman Begins, even though Reign of Fire came before. Not a bad thing, just....kinda been there, done that. It was Matthew McConaughey that was really fun to watch. Talk about an "American Bad Ass", who had the most epic scene I have witness in quite some time. You knew how it would end, but how f*cking cool was that seeing him fly through the air, Battle Axe in hand, going head to head with he Dragon? Yeeee-Haaaaaaaw!!

Definitely worth a Rent. This was much better than I thought it would be. I would and will watch this again if I come across it while channel surfing. Having Izabella Scorupco was nice eye candy amid all the doom and gloom. I haven't seen her in anything since, well, since GoldenEye. Well, nothing else of hers comes to mind anyway.

One of my top favs of all time. Try to watch this at least once a year. I'm thinking I need the blu-ray.

Have you guys seen Outlander? Different yet, similar.

Never seen Outlander.

So Mac, in your circle of friends or co-workers, etc.... does Reign Of Fire come up in conversation? Has it ever? What I'm trying to understand is why this doesn't seem to get any love from people out there. It's never reference or name-dropped when talk of this type of film is brought up. Just odd that it isn't.

I liked Outlander.  It was Beowulf and Grendel except they were aliens.

Good question. When I say something about Reign, the people that have seen it, agree its a good movie. I just think mentally it flies under the radar. Like now, unless someone mentioned it, I might have missed saying its one of my top 10.

Definitely an under-the-radar movie.  I remember seeing trailers for it.  Outlander on the other hand barely had a push at all, I think it was even held back.  I do remember hearing Mel Gibson might have been involved in it at some point.

I definitely remember the events around Outlander. I heard about it through the grapevine and since I love me some Dragons, it hooked me. I saw a trailer and thought I have to see this in the theater. I go to find out it has been in the can for awhile. They (Weinstein Co.) decide to release it Europe and not sure about a US release. WTF. So I’ve got my radar on for when it might make its brief appearance. For a little while, I hear nothing. Then I accidentally run across the DVD on Amazon. Unbelievable. Zero promotion for this. Why? Dunno. Looking at IMDB, it had a $50 Million budget. It drew in $160,000 at 34 theaters. I contend, most people still don’t know about this flick.

Literally for Outlander, just put an alien crash-landing on Earth, then have him act of Beowulf, you have the movie.

I think the movie was a European flick that the Weinsteins just distributed.  In fact, I think when they put this out on DVD you could only rent it at Blockbuster, which I'm sure was a BIG money-making move for them.  ESPECIALLY since no one even had a CHANCE to see it at the theater and were DYING to see it again and show it to their friends.

And by the way, the whole time this incredibly ill-advised exclusivity deal was going on, I don't recall seeing ANY kind of marketing push that was trying to convince people these awesome movies could only be found in one place and you gotta go now.  None of that.  I've seen more marketing for Orange Is The New Black on TV and I barely ever turn ON the TV!
