Rush Hour (1998)

Rush Hour - Platinum Series

Trailer

Rush Hour is clearly the best of the 3 films and a lot of it has to do with the fresh spin on the Buddy Cop genre where Lee (Jackie Chan) is a fish out of water on American soil, paired up with Carter (Chris Tucker). I think both of them played off each other extremely well which made this one a joy to watch. Even though this is a great flick, it's not their best work. I still think that Tucker's best role can be found in The Fifth Element. And although the fight sequences in Rush Hour are good, it's not even close to being Jackie's best. For that, you have to go with Drunken Master 2 (also known on American shores as The Legend Of Drunken Master).

I'm not what you would call a Brett Ratner fan. Far from it. But I will give him props for finally doing what no one else had been able to do: Break Jackie to a wider American audience. Sure, Chan had a minor hit with Rumble In The Bronx, but he was still largely ignore by the majority of the public at large.

This is definitely a Buy. I own it and so should you. Stick around for the end credits to check out the Blooper reel. Funny stuff.

I’ve heard rumors over the years about Chris Tucker just going completely Diva on his star power. Requesting ungodly movie fees, special accommodations, and a host of other over the top treatments. I think they started with the sequels to Rush Hour. Now he’s to the point of being black listed in Hollywood.  Look at his career in imdb. I’m just sayn’.

Oh definitely. It's no secret about where is head got inflated starting with the sequels as you pointed out. Just look at who got Top Billing with the first movie compared to who demanded Top Billing by the 3rd movie. As much as I like the first film, it was NEVER about him. It was all about Jackie. I may be biased because I was a fan of his long before the rest of America finally caught up, but I can only assume that most of the public was making the film franchise a world wide hit because of Jackie Chan....NOT Chris Tucker.

I just read an article from some critic about the missed opportunities Chris Tucker has had. None of it mentions bad persona, except maybe the projects offered to him were mostly crap.

But I take exception to his reasoning based on, these projects are what Chris Tucker stepped up to consider but ultimately turned down every time. No mention of what other things were offered to him.

Bottom line, I think his 15 minutes of fame are over. While I enjoyed the first Rush Hour and the chemistry with Jackie Chan and his role in 5th Element, I have zero care if he ever does anything again.

I haven't really seen him in anything since his cameo in Michael Jackson's You Rock My World video. I had forgotten all about him until I watched The Fifth Element a couple of nights ago.
