Deep Impact
Special Collector's Edition

Trailer

Ever since the Russian Meteor Explosion a couple of weeks back, I started trying to think of similarities between that event and the movie Deep Impact and it dawned on me that I had never seen the movie in its entirety. That explains why I couldn't recall any scenes from the movie. I think I only caught a few minutes at the tail end of the film when it first hit cable and a few scenes here and there over the years. So, this turned out to basically be a new movie for me to watch tonight. Wheeeeee!!

My "Wheeeee" didn't last long though. Deep Impact isn't a bad movie by any stretch. But when you are spoiled with movies like Armageddon and 2012, anything less than a full-on assault of the senses does come off as a big let down. Even the 'Money shot' that comes at the end when the first Comet hits was somewhat of a let down as well. It had some cool things going on, but they didn't really do much with it and in some spots it looked like they tried to cover up as much as possible so as not to have to do any more FX work.

If I were to give you a bunch of options to watch in the 'End-of-the-World' genre, this definitely wouldn't be my first choice...or third. But I do think it's still worth a Rent if you have more patience than I do, because you're gonna need it and it may not deliver for you like you hope it should. But if cerebral is your thing, this may in fact be exactly what you're looking for.

It's very... paced.  It's the dread of the clock running out, more than racing against the clock like in "Armageddon."  It feels more real cause it's on the ground-- for the most part-- and real life is rather slow.  Even the end of the world would be day to day, even though we never expect that it would be.

I was thinking though that the spaceship they built in orbit is what I kinda picture the ship in "Rendezvous With Rama" would be, except a smaller version.

I get that it's more real to life and I was thinking just that as I was watching the movie. But I want over the top, sh*t hitting the fan in movies built specifically for this type of genre. I don't know the back story regarding the writers and producers of Deep Impact are, but it almost felt like they purposely wanted to do the complete opposite of Armageddon to avoid the inevitable comparisons between the two when they each rolled out their respective films.
