Serenity
Collector's Edition

Trailer

If you have never seen Firefly, a little back story is in order to understand Serenity. The 'Big Bad Boogie Men' that make up the Firefly universe come in two shapes. One is the Alliance, the others are called Reavers. In the series we saw plenty of Alliance to know that they were always going to be a thorn in the side of the crew. But it was the Reavers that we never got a chance to see on the show, but they painted a good enough picture that we never really needed to see them. Their reputation filled in the blanks and they were always a threat.

That's where the movie comes in. It's actually all about the Reavers and everything that's connected to them. We finally get answers to how they came to be and why the Alliance was hellbent on capturing River. She held the Reavers creation in her head and naturally that's something the Government would want to keep under wraps. The heart and soul of Serenity is still River and we get to see her transformation into a killing machine of epic proportions and Joss Whedon delivers the ultimate moment by having her and her alone literally take on all the Reavers and it was and still is exciting to watch, no matter how many times I watch the movie. The original cast of Nathan Fillion, Gina Torries, Adam Baldwin, Ron Glass, Jewel Staite, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau all return and do their characters justice.

The only reason why this doesn't get a perferct score from me is that Ron Glass' role is nothing more than a cameo. Also, I'm still p*ssed in how they dealt with Tudyk's character of Wash. I won't say anything beyond that just on the off chance you guys have been living under a rock and haven't seen the movie. But I will say that it STILL startles me every time I see the scene in question. So, do you have to have seen Firefly to enjoy Serenity? No. But I think you will get a lot more out of the movie if you do. There are small, subtle nuances of the characters that may fly over your head if you're coming into the movie cold. Anyway, I highly recommend Serenity as a Buy. It looks and sounds fantastic and the story does the series justice.

FYI, I'm still not giving up hope of another sequel in spite of Whedon saying it's never gonna happen. I'd take a Table Reading at his house with the Gang all there if that's the only way I can get my fix. Make it happen!

I'd buy it if I had a Blu-ray player.

Too bad this isn't available (diff companies means you can't get the show and the movie packaged together).

Personally, I have the steelbook cover, it's pretty sweet.

Totally noticed Summer is your current avatar... talk about someone tough to draw.

Yeah, I thought that was a bit odd when you said that both Firefly and Serenity would be in the same case. It will never happen since FOX owns the name and why Whedon had to name the movie Serenity, which ironically enough, I thought was a great name for the movie. What's in the Steel Book that isn't on the version that I have? I know I need to upgrade and intend to do so.

It's just the DVD and blu-ray, it's just a pretty sweet package.  I actually imagine the nice box DVD thing you have might be more loaded, I'm not sure.

I heard that there was more to the Special Edition....not to be confused with the Collector's Edition, which I have.

Seems like it pretty much the same thing. I thought there was a Q&A Panel.

Joss Whedon Serenity Intro

Very funny intro that was made exclusively for those 'Browncoats' that were asked to attend the private screening of Serenity when it was still a work in progress. The jokes within the intro is classic Whedon and you know when watching it when it's asking for crowd participation of laughter. I just wish someone actually videotaped the crowd when it played to get the full effect of the Intro/Audience reaction. I've never been able to find a clip. Not sure if it even exist.
