Shanghai Noon

Trailer

I love Westerns, I'm a big fan of Jackie Chan and Martial Arts. So, you would think that Shanghai Noon would be the perfect mash-up right? Not so fast. The movie isn't bad, but it really doesn't offer anything new to a worn out 'Buddy Cop' Genre. The best way to describe the movie is to say 'Rush Hour meets the Old West'. Once again, Jackie Chan plays the fish out of water, which offers him more opportunity to mine the laughs from unfamiliar situation as well as the language barrier. It's typical 'Hollywood Jackie Chan'. You know the 'beats' inside and out. You know when the fights sequences are going to come and how he uses props in and around his location to battle his foes.

If you're a fan Jackie as I am, you can clearly see the martial arts employed in movies like this really pale in comparison to his Hong Kong films, which are epic in both scope and execution. As for Shanghai Noon, even though it has some charm to it, I think the biggest blunder is in the casting of Owen Wilson. Really not sure why the producers went with him. Out of all of Hollywood, he was the only one chosen? I think the movie would have been better and far more entertaining if Ben Stiller was picked to star opposite Jackie, even if this type of movie is way out of Stiller's 'zone'. Anyway, the movie is still worth a Rent. Also co-stars Lucy Liu, Xander Berkeley and Walton Goggins.

This sounds like the first time you've seen the movie.  Is it?

Nope. Saw it in the theaters and then bought it on DVD. Why? I have no f*cking idea. Probably a slow release day and there wasn't anything else to buy.

I was also contemplating your question about why Jackie's American films don't have all that action that his Chiense films do, and I think it's a mix between American directors not being able to handle that sheer amount of stuntwork, and I'll bet that the MPAA would be real quick to slap an R-rating on it when the violence gets too high-intensity or high volume.

I dunno about the MPAA thing. They are more concerned with profanity and sex. That's been the knock against them for so many years that they let the violence slide, but have major issues with something as simple as side-boobs. As for why Jackie hasn't been able to replicate the style of martial arts in american films, just go watch the original cut of Drunken Master II and you will see that he pretty much blew his entire wad on that film. He himself said that he hasn't been the same since shooting the movie, which btw is my all time favorite Chan movie as well as martial arts movie and THE one that I measure all films in this genre. Epic doesn't even begin to do it justice. That's next up to watch. Need to dig it up somewhere here........
