Singles

Trailer

I'm a huge fan of Cameron Crowe, but Singles isn't one of his better films. The writing and the directing is okay, it's just that the story itself regarding single people has been done to death over the years and this really didn't offer anything new to the formula when it came out. Really, the movie only has a few standout moments that have absolutely nothing to do with the story. It's biggest claim to fame are the appearances by Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. I wouldn't have expected anything less with the movie set entirely in Seattle during the Grunge years.

The cast is okay. I did have a crush on Bridget Fonda for the longest time. What does that have to do with the movie? Nothing. Moving on. Matt Dillon was also great. But for me, the best roles in the movie were the blink and you'll miss parts with Eric Stoltz as a Mime, Jeremy Piven as a cashier, Tim Burton as a Video Director for a dating service and Cameron himself as a Rock Journalist. Big stretch, huh? Ha. I just wish the movie was better than the final product. I do like the movie for one thing at least and that's the feel of what it was like in the 90's. The film reminds me a lot of The Real World California (Season 2) and The Real World San Francisco (Season 3). Even the scenes where the characters in the movie break the 4th wall, taking to the audience is very reminiscent of the 'Testimonials' the cast in The Real World do when doing their confession scenes.

Anyway, for a slice of 90's life and seeing 3 of the biggest Grunge bands ever (minus Nirvana) in the same movie, it's worth a Rent at best.
