Slacker
The Criterion Collection

Trailer

I had heard about Slacker before Kevin Smith named-dropped it as THE movie that made him decide to become a film maker. Ever since that day, he has been the biggest cheerleader for the film. But no matter how many times I read about it in print or watching Kevin talk about it on camera, it was never a movie that I had to see. I knew about the 'barely-there-plot' and the bad acting and writing and direction. Needless to say, all those warts are definitely here on full display. Having just watched it, I can't for the life of me understand how this is a "critically acclaimed" movie at all.

I get what Kevin saw in the movie. Hell, I just watched it and even I know that it's going to always be a film that kickstarts wannabe auteurs into believing they too can "write and direct" their own stories. Some will succeed and some will not. So, for that, it does offer something, if not an actual story. Slacker does have a theme, which is basically a day in the life of random "Slackers". There is no beginning, middle or end. It's 90 minutes of one character running into another character and then following that character into the next character. The dialogue is horrible. It may have been "written on the page", but the way the actors read their lines, they come off as if they are making this sh*t up on the spot. I guess I'm in the minority in saying this isn't a good film. I've seen worst mind you. But this is still a bad movie. Skip this one all the way. Way overrated. Don't even get me started on this being a movie worth of The Criterion Collection stamp of approval.........
