Snow White & the Huntsman
Extended EditionTrailer Like most people on the planet, the only exposure I have with the
Snow White mythology is by way of the
Disney film. I've never read the story as it was originally intended, long before it became watered-down in cartoon form to appeal the family audience. So, I obviously had an interest in
Snow White & the Huntsman, with the idea that it would skew more darker in tone. Someone will have to clue me in if the movie is faithful to the book or if this is just a re-imagining of the classic story.
With that said, I don't think a lot of time and care was given to the script. What should have been an epic tale set in the
Sword and Sorcery Genre is undermined by poor writing when it comes to character development, especially the relationship of
Snow White (Kristen Stewart) and
William. The film is asking us to believe in a chemistry the two share, yet the writer and I'll even pin this on the director himself failed to set up some kind of connection between the two as kids. So, when they are reunited years later, I couldn't have cared less. To compound matters, the whole reunion is undermined with the
Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). They share more screen time together than anyone else and now we are suppose to root for
William instead of him? I don't think so.
This movie had so much promise going for it based on the first 15 minutes of the film, from the Battle Scene to how
Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) infiltrates and hijacks another kingdom of her own. And then.....it's all down hill from here.
Theron is a fantastic actress and it's such a shame that she is wasted in the role of the
Queen. She is given nothing to do other than just watch herself getting older. They should have given her plenty of scenes to scheme and whatnot, but they don't do anything with her at all reducing her to what amounts to a cameo in my eyes.
I may sound like I'm bagging on the movie, but it's not all bad. It's just that right now all I can see is what could have been. The best part of the film obviously is the Special FX, which has some pretty awesome looking stuff inhabiting the world of the '
Dark Forrest'. But no amount of eye candy can save a movie with a weak script, poor editing and wooden acting. The other good thing about the movie and one that took me totally by surprise was the addition of
Bob Hoskins, Ian McShane and
Nick Frost as 3 of the Dwarves. I figured they would have cast actual little people for the roles and not these cats. The movie is worth a
Rent as a last resort.
