Snow White & the Huntsman
Extended Edition

Trailer

Like most people on the planet, the only exposure I have with the Snow White mythology is by way of the Disney film. I've never read the story as it was originally intended, long before it became watered-down in cartoon form to appeal the family audience. So, I obviously had an interest in Snow White & the Huntsman, with the idea that it would skew more darker in tone. Someone will have to clue me in if the movie is faithful to the book or if this is just a re-imagining of the classic story.

With that said, I don't think a lot of time and care was given to the script. What should have been an epic tale set in the Sword and Sorcery Genre is undermined by poor writing when it comes to character development, especially the relationship of Snow White (Kristen Stewart) and William. The film is asking us to believe in a chemistry the two share, yet the writer and I'll even pin this on the director himself failed to set up some kind of connection between the two as kids. So, when they are reunited years later, I couldn't have cared less. To compound matters, the whole reunion is undermined with the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). They share more screen time together than anyone else and now we are suppose to root for William instead of him? I don't think so.

This movie had so much promise going for it based on the first 15 minutes of the film, from the Battle Scene to how Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) infiltrates and hijacks another kingdom of her own. And then.....it's all down hill from here. Theron is a fantastic actress and it's such a shame that she is wasted in the role of the Queen. She is given nothing to do other than just watch herself getting older. They should have given her plenty of scenes to scheme and whatnot, but they don't do anything with her at all reducing her to what amounts to a cameo in my eyes.

I may sound like I'm bagging on the movie, but it's not all bad. It's just that right now all I can see is what could have been. The best part of the film obviously is the Special FX, which has some pretty awesome looking stuff inhabiting the world of the 'Dark Forrest'. But no amount of eye candy can save a movie with a weak script, poor editing and wooden acting. The other good thing about the movie and one that took me totally by surprise was the addition of Bob Hoskins, Ian McShane and Nick Frost as 3 of the Dwarves. I figured they would have cast actual little people for the roles and not these cats. The movie is worth a Rent as a last resort.

I had TOTALLY forgotten about the dwarf casting until they popped up.  I loved that, I was trying to figure out how they did it (head replacement).  I could have gone for a WHOLE movie of just those guys.  And I think they had some interesting names but I don't remember what the heck they were.

You can tell this guy directed Halo commercials, the look of the flick was very visual, in a "mainstream doesn't show **** like this" style, inspiration from Miyazaki and video games and so on, I liked that, but yeah, I didn't really dig the story-- which I think was based on a book.

I dug Charlize too, and here's me being a deplorable guy, I could TOTALLY go for more scheming scenes in the milk.  She should have freakin' tried to DROWN K-Stew in that stuff.

It would have made for a far more interesting story had she done just that.

And I'm not talking it looking like mud-wrestling or anything like that, I'm talking pushing her in fully dressed and holding her down.   With BIG air bubbles popping to the surface, thrashing arms and all that.  Wouldn't the "fairness" transfer?

It's reminding me of the healing tubs in Wanted.  And at least in Wanted (which *I* liked), we got a little visual treat at the end of that milk scene.

Oh, and I can't be the ONLY one who kept thinking "Graham Chapman" every time we saw the father in hi armor, right?

Oh, my money is on you waiting in line opening day for Snow White and the Huntsman 2.

Question, If there are 6 more of these films on the way, will the last one be called Snow White and the 7 Huntsman?

Now I'm kinda thinking of a Snow White like this where it's a young boy and the Huntsman is a taking-care-of-business female homesteader...

You know, back then, all children were called girls.  Boys were called "knave girls" and girls were called "gay girls."

And consider this, you could have this whole thing going on where Charlize Theron's hunger for power can't be sated because maybe the law of the land prevents a female from having total power, if the boy is the next heir, it would do Charlize well to drown him in the milk.
