Spider-Man 3 (2007)
« on: December 14, 2012, 06:26:39 pm »

This could and should have been the best of the entire series. Spider-Man 3 equals not one, not two, but three villains for Peter Parker / Spidey to do battle with. But therein lies the problem. There are too many villains and each one is never allowed to fully develop in a way to matter to the story. Each is spread way too thin. I believe that it should have been 2 at the most, Goblin and Venom. The odd man out should have been Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). That's not to say that I didn't like the character or even Church's performance. I thought he did a great job, especially as Flint Marko. It's just that the Sandman character for what this movie was about was pointless and didn't add anything other than a cool opportunity for a different kind of CGI FX.

Now onto the matter of Venom. I think they dropped the ball on this one. For me, when I think of Venom, the character should be this massive, hulking beast. In the movie, he is just too small, not to mention that I think Topher Grace just wasn't that good as Eddie Brock / Venom. His performance was too hammy. And speaking of hammy.....

One of the issues I have with how the Symbiote suit affects Peter in a negative way, slowly turning him "evil" is that Tobey Maguire is just not believable in portraying a bad ass, no matter how far he combs his hair over his eyes. He looks like a dirty, unwashed, unbathed goth kid that has grooming problems. Also, having him strut down the street as a means to convey that he is a bad ass does more damage to the character, even though I found it incredibly funny....intentional or otherwise. He looks like a cartoonish idiot. If that wasn't enough to completely derail the movie, they decided that adding a 'dance' number would be the way to go.

So, do I think the movie is as bad as most people have claimed it to be? It's not the best in the series, that's for sure, but there are some good, fun, entertaining moments throughout and I did enjoy the finale between all 4 Superheroes. I do think this is worth a Rent in spite of what some people will say about it.

With the review out of the way, I like to point out that the Spider-Man franchise basically swipes everything from the first 3 Superman films. It uses the same paradigm: Movie 1: Spidey / Superman are unleashed onto the world, Movie 2: Spidey / Superman quit and want a normal life and Movie 3: Spidey / Superman become evil. I guess killing this incarnation of the Spidey franchise saved us from Spidey / Superman in their 'Quest for Peace'.
